Main Aims

  • Students will be able to use the five senses and associated body parts correctly in sentences.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Students will be able to identify the five senses and their corresponding body parts. Students will be able to use the target structures correctly in spoken English.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Students will sing the 5 Senses song. Students are asked questions to review the 5 senses vocabulary learned in earlier lessons.

Exposure (3-4 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Elicit the structures: I see with my eyes. I hear with my ears. I touch with my hands. I taste with my tongue. I smell with my nose. Write the structure on the board. Ask students to read aloud the structures.

Highlighting (1-2 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

The teacher asks some students to read the sentences from the texts shown in the previous stage.

Clarification (1-2 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

The teacher reviews the pronunciation of the sentence “I ___ with my ___”. Students practice some choral repetition.

Controlled Practice (5-6 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Activity: Spinner Game / Last Man Standing The teacher will distribute sentence/picture cards to each student. A spinner wheel will be used to select sentences randomly. When the spinner lands on a sentence, the student who has the matching sentence on their card must hand it to the teacher. Students who give up their cards are eliminated from that round. The activity ends once all students have sat down.

Semi-Controlled Practice (10-11 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Activity 1: Basketball The teacher will choose one student from each team. The student will get a ball from the basket and look at it. If for example there's a picture of an eye on the ball, you must say "I see with my eyes." Then, try to shoot the ball in the basket. If you make the shot, you get 5 points! Activity 2: Group Work In this game, students are divided into five groups and given a large sheet of paper about the five senses: see, hear, taste, touch, and smell. They are also given pictures to stick on the paper. The goal is for each group to work together within two minutes to match the images with the sense they represent. Call some volunteers to talk in front of the class.

Free Practice (4-5 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Sensory Exploration Activity Each team will be given a fun activity to explore their senses. Hearing: The team gets containers and different objects to put inside. They will shake the container and see if it makes a sound. Smelling: You'll have a variety of things to smell. Decide if they smell good or bad, tick the box for good smell, or put an X if they think it smells bad. Touching: There will be balloons filled with different objects. Feel them and try to guess what they are. Then, match them to pictures. Some students from the team can also explore and read some books given to them. Tasting: Your group will get different foods to taste (like sweet, sour, bitter, and salty). Seeing: You'll use magnifying glasses to look closely at small pictures in a container. They can also manipulate with a flashlight to point at objects.
