Air Travel: the Inside Story
Upper-Intermediate (B2) level

Description

In my lesson I am going to provide the students with learning and revising vocabulary (sub aim) about airplanes and airports through reading (main aim) and speaking (sub aim). At the beginning of the lesson I will lead in with the sounds that people may hear at airports and ask a few questions about the ss` flight experiences. Then I will have the ss revise and pre-teach the target vocabulary. After that, the ss will have a chance for the gist reading and reading for details about an air industry from inside. At the post reading stage the learners will have freer practice of vocabulary through speaking about airports and air travel experiences.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading about an airline industry

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide learning a new, revising already learnt and practicing vocabulary about an airline industry through reading and speaking

Procedure

Lead in (4-5 minutes) • To engage students in the topic by providing with an opportunity to listen and speak about airports and air travel

At the beginning of my lesson I will set the the sounds that you can hear in an airport. Ss will need to guess where it is. As soon as they get the point, Have the ss to work in pairs and let them ask each other few questions like: Have you ever flown by plane? If so, where have you flown? How often do you fly? Do you enjoy flying?

Pre-teaching and revising vocabulary (5-8 minutes) • To provide the students with meaning and form of lexical items about an airline industry

I will draw a mind map divided into 4 sections: procedures, stuff, verbs and others. Ss will have to fill in these sections with the words connected to the airline industry, that they already know and new words that I will elicit from them. These new words are supposed to be: an aisle seat, crew, customs, flight attendant (steward, stewardess), take off. if they do not know the difference between luggage and baggage I will explain it to them.

Reading for gist (4-7 minutes) • To have the ss guess and get the main idea of the text

I will give the ss HOs #1. I will ask the ss to answer 7 questions. Have them work in pairs. After that get a feedback as a whole class, about what they think on these questions. Gist Reading. Then I will have the ss divided into 2 groups. Group A will get handouts A and group be - HOs B. The As will have to find the answers from the text on the first 3 questions and Bs on the last 2 questions. Ask ss to work individually and give them 1 min. After that ask them to compare their answers with the partner. If there is a problem with finding the right answers, help them with giving some hints.

Reading for details (6-8 minutes) • To provide more detailed and challenging reading through filling in the gaps with given words.

Ask As and Bs to read their paragraphs again and fill in the gaps with the words above the paragraphs. They may get the words from the context as well. Then ask them to check in groups. Give the feedback on the board.

Post-reading #1 (5-6 minutes) • To give the students a chance to speak and listen to each other about general information they have from the text

Ask As to find a partner from Bs and retell the idea of paragraphs they have and Bs will do the same by retelling their paragraphs.

Post-reading #2 (5-7 minutes) • To practice the vocabulary through speaking and listening to each other

Ask ss to work in pairs. They will have to stand back to back. One ss will watch the videos (if time allows 2 videos) connected to the airports and airplanes and will retell what will go on there to his/her partner. Show the video for about 50 seconds and then stop it. After that partners change and the one who was retelling now will have to listen. If there is a difficulty with understanding my instructions I will demo.

Post-reading #3 (3-5 minutes) • To have students practice their speaking skills by using the target vocabulary about an airline industry

If time allows, I will ask the ss to think and tell the whole class about their bad or funny experiences in the airports and airplanes.
