Description

In this lesson, SS will develop their gist and scan reading skills through the context of travelling. The lesson will start with a warmer, then it is followed by vocabulary matching and fill the gap activities to introduce the context. Pre-reading stage will use realia and some photos to build curiosity about the text. In while-reading stage, gist and scan reading skills will be developed through heading-paragraph matching and detailed reading of the text. Discussion will be used in post-reading stage to talk about the context and relate it with SS' experience.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and scan reading practice using a text about Lonely Planet travel guide in the context of travel

Subsidiary Aims

  • To expose SS to vocabulary of travel

Procedure

Stage 1 (Warmer) (10-12 minutes) • To introduce the lesson and activate present perfect tense

4 corners warmer: This activity should be done ideally 3 times, but if it is time consuming, do it twice. 4 corners 1: -Make 4 imaginary corners. -Point to a corner and say "Bodrum". -Point to another corner and say "Izmir". -Point to a different corner and say "Antalya". -Point to a 4th corner and say "Kaş". -Drill the corners by pointing them silently. Drill until SS remember the corners. -Give instructions: Ask SS to stand up and choose a city they have been to. After they choose a city, they need to stay at that corner. -Model questions: Have you ever been to ........? When did you go there..........? Who did you go with? Were there any interesting places? -Give instructions: Find a pair in your group and ask them about their experience in that city. -Give SS some time to do the activity. -SS will switch corners. 4 corners 2: -Similar instructions. -Corners: Muhlama, Tantuni, Iskender, Etli Ekmek

Stage 2 (vocabulary) (10-12 minutes) • To introduce vocabulary of travel

Give model: -Use power point slide for matching activities -model one example. -Divide SS into 3 groups. -Give 2 discs for each group. -Give instructions: Work in group, match the phrase with the correct picture. Stick the discs to the correct picture. ICQs WCFB -With the same group, SS will do exercise 2a by using previous vocabulary. -Give instructions. -ICQs -Feedback: give answer sheet.

Stage 3 (Pre-reading) (8-10 minutes) • To build interest and curiosity about the text

-Show a travel guide -Elicit questions Is it a novel? What information can I find in the book? Travel guide of which country have you got? Have you ever used them? -Show a picture of Tony and Maureen Wheeler: -Elicit questions: Is this an old photo or a new photo? Which country have they been to? How did they travel? Are they rich?

Stage 4 (While-reading) (10-12 minutes) • To develop gist and scan reading skills

-Make some pairs. -Give instructions: SS will do exercise 4b, match the headings with the paragraphs -ICQs -WHFB -With the same pairs: -Give instructions: SS will do exercise 4c, answering text-based questions. Read the text more detailed -Feedback:WCFB

Stage 5 (Post-reading) (5-7 minutes) • To discuss the text and personalise the context

Elicit answers: -Is it easier or more difficult to travel now than in 1973? -What do you think the safest public transportation is? -Have you ever travelled to a different city by bus? -How long did it take to get there? -Was it a good experience?
