Description

In this lesson Ss review simple past tense through the context of weekend activities. The lesson starts with a review of some words and the past form of some verbs which followed by a listening task. Ss listen for a gist first and then they listen again for some details. After listening the T will ask Ss to work with the WB to make correct sentences in the simple past tense then he will give FB to Ss and then drill the sentences. Finally, T will have Ss think about what they did last weekend and talk about them.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist listening practice using a text about Resturant and cafe in the context of weekend activities

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a Conversation in the context of weekend activities

Procedure

Lead-in (2-4 minutes) • to provide students with the context of free time activties and engage their attention

T shows pictures of different places especially the ones good to go at the weekends and elicits the words then he chooses the picture of the restaurant and sticks it at the center of the board. After that he shows other pictures about different things in these places and tries to elicit the right words for the restaurant and sticks them around the picture of the restaurant. This gives the Ss the context for the upcoming listening task.

Pre-listening (5-7 minutes) • to review the simple past tense quickly and review the vocabulary Ss need for the listening task

T divides Ss into three groups and after giving clear instructions has each group choose on of the three pockets he has put on the table. The pockets contain the words from three different categories; food and drinks, nationalities, past form of some verbs. Ss should work in groups and then come to the board and stick their papers on the right ones on the board. Next T will have a quick feedback and corrects the probable mistakes.

Listening for gist (5-7 minutes) • to provide Ss with chance to listen to the TL and look for a gist

T will give clear instructions and and then asks ICQs and if it is necessary he models the activity for the students and asks them to listen for understanding the places the people on the recording went for the weekend. Ss can check their answers together. After doing the task teacher checks the answers with WC. If students do not agree for some answers T plays the recording to end the disagreement.

Listeng for details (7-10 minutes) • To have Ss listen more carefully and try to understand more details

T gives instructions on the listening tasks and he tells them that they need to listen very carefully this time and understand if they thing the people had at their weekend were good or bad, cheap or expensive etc. After asking ICQs and modeling the activity T gives the printed charts to Ss and plays the recording. Ss may need to listen for the second time. After finishing the task teacher checks the answers with the WC.

Questions about the past (2-3 minutes) • to practice asking Qs about activities in the past and pepare Ss for the interview activity

T use gestures and miming to elicit the right questions about the past activities and drill a model of questions about the past. T focuses on the pronunciation and the stress in the questions.

Questions about the past, words' order (3-5 minutes) • to make sure Ss have understood makig questions about the past activities and ready for the interview

T will gives Ss clear instructions on completing the sentences and questions in past tense and after asking ICQs gives them the handouts and some time to finish the task then T asks different Ss to read their answers and he provides them with productive feedback.

Speaking through interview (6-10 minutes) • to provide students with a free ctivity to talk more and use the language they have learnt in practice

T gives instructions to Ss and asks them to stand up and mingle through the class and choose one partner and interview them with the questions about the activity they recently did. Since this is going to be the last activity and a productive task, T will monitor Ss's job carefully to correct them either in asking questions or giving answers. When Ss finished their interview they will sit down and talk about what their interviewees did recently.
