Description

In this lesson Ss will learn new voabulary (places in the city) via matching pictures to words(HO1).Then, I'll elicit information about Istanbul mainly under "where to stay, getting there and things to see and do". Then they'll do the same after reading the text (about Barcelona and Progue ) by skimming the text and then scanning to answer another exercise. I'll put the answers on WB as prompts for the next exercise which is mainly to answer "Which of the two would you like to visit? /What would you do/see?/Where would you stay?" and Ss discuss their answers in pairs.

Main Aims

  • To practice gist and scan reading skills using a text about Weekend Break in the context of Holiday Brochures

Subsidiary Aims

  • For Ss to learn vocabulary related to places in the city in the context of city brochures

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I'll set the context by posting a Istanbul tourist map on WB and ask: What is it? Ss: A map Which city? Ss: Istanbul Is it for you or for tourists? Ss: For tourist. What can you see in this map? Ss: bus, subway, Bosphorus Bridge...

Vocabulary ( places in the city) (9-10 minutes) • To provide Ss with required vocabulary for reading/speaking about cities

T: I'll give you some papers, you have the pictures of places in Istanbul and the words. match them in pairs. ICQ: 1.Will you write the answers? 2. Will you work on it alone? I'll give them HO1. PW. FB: I'll nominate Ss to read different answers and drill right after. At the end I'll show them the pictures on my paper and ask them to say the words again. WC.

Pre-Reading (3-4 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

On WB: Where to stay/ Getting there/things to do &see........in Istanbul T: "Im a tourist. Help me. I'm in Ataturk airport. How can I get here? Where can I stay? What are good places to see?" I'll elicit one or two answers (not on WB) PW( to discuss Qs). 2mins.

While-Reading #1 (8-9 minutes) • To provide Ss with gist reading practice

T: "Now, We are going to read about Barcelona and Prague(on WB) Where are they? You have three paragraphs with gaps. Match them to this headings( pointing to WB)." HOs. Ss will have 4 minutes to find the answers. PW to compare answers. FB: WC

While-Reading #2 (4-5 minutes) • To provide students with a more challenging detailed reading task

On WB: ........There beaches. Barcelona or Prague? How do you know? Read the Sentences in exercise 3 write B (Barcelona) or P (Prague). PW. 3 mins. FB: nominating Ss

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

I'll give then an example: "I'm from Tehran. The airport is outside the city, but you can take a taxi, you can stay in hotels, or rent a place. You can go to museums or galleries. Now, think of a city in Turkey".I'll elicit the names and ask them to make a list for that city. They"ll talk in new pairs. And a new pairs if there's time. FB: I'll ask few Ss to Share with the class
