Subsidiary Aims

-
To develop speaking skills by discussing topic related vocabulary
Procedure (32-54 minutes)
Will have visuals on the WB showing different grocery shops found in Turkey. As nearly all of the Ss are Turkish this will personalize the lesson a bit more. Will elicit from Ss what they see in the visuals, and move into a conversation about why we go there, and what kind of things we get there.
Will hand out visual print out of vocab cards from the lesson (margarine, jam, bottle). Every Ss has two items, one they can give away (red) and one they need (green). Ss must stand up move about the class, not showing their items to anyone, and asking other Ss for the item they need. Teacher will limit speaking to clear instructions and why ask ICQs before the activity. "Are we using sitting down during this activity?". "Are we showing our classmates our cards or asking them for something?". When completed (4 mins) will have students say what they have. "I have a bottle of water", "I have a can of lemonade", etc.
CCQs - How do you count uncountable nouns? A bottle of water, seven tubs of margarine, 3 cartons of milk. Containers are things that are used to carry, transport or hold other nouns. They range in size and shape and help to tell the location of other nouns. Containers are all countable. One group of quantifiers is common with food and items found at home and the names of the containers in which the items are sold....leading into eliciting from Ss box, tub, tin, etc. Will do drilling exercises as well as examples of form on the WB.
Alone, have Ss complete ex. 1 from the book. They will have 1 min. Review answers as a class.
Ss will work in pairs on ex. 2 from the book. Each pair must list 2 additional items that could be found in a can, a tin, a tub, etc, in a grocery store. After 4 mins. time is up pairs become groups and share answers with each other for 2 mins. Then WC shares their findings with T.
Chest and clearly explain HO for class mingle. Tell Ss they have 5 mins. to walk around the class asking as many classmates as they can 2 questions....fill out form and when time is up have Ss share their findings with the class. What was similar? What was different?
Ss will work as a group to come up with an essential grocery shopping list of ten items that all group members agree on. Groups will have 4 mins. to work on the list, then the groups will share what they had written down. Compare similarities and differences between each list.
IF needed, and if there is time remaining at the end of class, provide simple error correction and FB on WB.
