Read for Gist 'sofasurfing'
Elementary Level level

Description

In this lesson students will combine receptive and productive skills by reading and speaking about 'sofasurfing'. I will also introduce some vocabulary by having them meet the language in realistic contexts and see how the items fit into the meaning and style of a whole text (Scrivener, J.,2011 pg.194). Simple present tense will be discussed through the text.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To give students practice in reading for gist and specific information in the context of personal information profiles.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To give students semi-controlled written practice of the present simple in the context of travel.
  • To provide fluency in speaking through the context of travel.
  • To provide practice of vocabulary in the context of travel.

Procedure

Lead In (5 minutes) • To elicit the topic 'sofasurfing' by using pictures and realia

I will have a picture of Rio on the whiteboard. Each student will receive $300 and a plane ticket. I will explain to them that they have no credit cards,no hotel reservations, but really want to go. "What are our options?"(sleep on the beach, park, what else...) I will tell the students that I have a friend in Rio, but you could only contact him through the internet. Ask them the meaning of 'sofa' and introduce the 'sofasurfing'

Activity #1 (5 minutes) • To practice their productive skills (speaking).

Teacher will ask: When you travel, do you stay in hotels?with friends?on campsites?somewhere else? English Unlimited Elementary Course book Unit 2.2 pg.20 ex:1

Activity #2 (5 minutes) • Read for gist

Teacher will give the students 3 minutes to read the 'sofasurfing ad' and have students answer ex:2 on pg.20, from our course book English Unlimited Elementary. They will then check their answers with their partner. Teacher will go over the answers quickly, have brief discussion to make sure everyone is clear on the subject.

Activity#3 (5 minutes) • Read to scan

The teacher will have students work in groups of four. Each group will be given a sheet (T/F HO). They will skim and scan the profiles to see whether the statements are true or false. The teacher checks if there are any inconsistant answers with the whole class through discussion.

Activity#4 (5 minutes) • Scan for vocabulary

The groups will stay together for this exercise. The teacher will hand the students a list of definitions, synonyms or collocation that have the same meanings as words from the text. (scan vocab. HO) The teacher will ask the students to find the correct match and stick the definition underneath the word on the WB. This activity will generate energy to the class. The group that sticks all definitions correctly first wins!

Activity#5 (5 minutes) • Practice scan reading for specific information.

Students will work in groups to scan each profile, and determine what both people have 'in common'. English Unlimited Elementary Teacher's Pack pg 32 The teacher should make sure all students know the meaning of 'in common'. Give 3 minutes, and with WC discussion clarify any inconsistant answers.

Activity#6 (7 minutes) • To practice their productive skills (writing).

Each student will work on their own, perhaps get help from a partner if they get stuck somewhere. The teacher will give out an empty profile, similiar to the one they just read (student profile HO). Learners will fill out the profile, writing about themselves. When they are done, they will stick the profile on the WB.

Activity#7 (7 minutes) • To give semi-controlled 'productive skills' practice of the present simple.

Each student will pick a random profile off the WB. The teacher will write a few examples on the WB. (Ex: She likes .... He lives .... She stays ..... ) Learners will write sentences about the profile they picked out. Teacher will monitor activity and help those having trouble. Teacher will go around the class, asking students abouts their friend.
