Teaching practice 3B
Beginner level

Description

In this lesson students will review and build on the vocabulary (daily routines and adverbs of frequency) and grammar ((present simple with -s/-es endings) and will practice asking and answering present simple yes/no and information questions. Students will listen to a survey for gist and details and will complete an information gap activity to practice writing and asking questions about daily routines.

Materials

Abc English Unlimited, David Hoff, Cambridge UP, 2010, pp. 50-51

Main Aims

  • To introduce students to present simple questions using question words in the context of daily routines.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide speaking practice by asking and answering questions about daily routines.

Procedure

Warm-up/lead in (7-10 minutes) • To establish the lesson context and review vocabulary and grammar from the two previous lessons

-review daily routines vocabulary (get up, have a shower, have breakfast, read the paper, etc...) by miming activities and eliciting vocabulary from Ss -to further review put Ss into two teams and have them play a sentence matching game. Place sentences cut in two on floor or on a table in front of class and have Ss from each team come up and choose two halves If the halves match they get a point for their team. If they don't match they do not get a point. -as a lead in to the lesson about present simple questions and questions beginning with when where and how, T will hold up a few of the sentences from teh sentence matching activity to elicit the questions such as When do you go to work?, How do you go to work? and Where do you usually eat? from the Ss.

Listening (7-10 minutes) • Listening to a short dialogue for gist and details to identify the present continuous questions and and answers and write the questions correctly

- T gives Ss p. 50 of English Unlimited -to set the context T asks Ss to look at photo on p. 50 and asks "Where are they?" (on the street) "What is the woman doing?" (answering questions) - T directs Ss to activity 1a and tells them to listen to recording 2.13 and write down the 3 questions the woman asks the man. T plays the recording once or twice if necessary. - T asks Ss to check in pairs to see if they have the same answers. - T then asks 3 different Ss to read their answers to the class. -T directs Ss to 1b and asks Ss to listen again and identify what the man says. T plays the recording once or twice if necessary. -to check answers T hands out one answer to each S. Some answers are correct and some are incorrect. In pairs, Ss read their answers and decide if one of them has the correct answer. -T asks Ss with correct answers to read their answers.

Presentation of grammar (7-10 minutes) • to present grammar

-T asks Ss "What is the first question the woman asks the man? -T then asks a Ss the question "When do you finish work?" -T does the same with "Where do you have lunch?" and "How do you go to work?" -Once T is sure Ss understand meaning of question T then does a drill with Ss to practice stress and pronunciation by saying the questions last word to first and having the Ss repeat them. -T writes out each question on right side of board after Ss have repeated several times and marks stress patterns for each question. -T writes yes/no questions ("Do you get up at 6:00?/ Do you live in London?/ Do you go to school by bus?) on left side of board - To confirm Ss understand the different way to answer yes/no and information questions, teacher asks individual Ss questions. -T will briefly review intonation to practice rising and falling tones of questions

Grammar practice (10-15 minutes) • To have Ss practice present simple questions through a controlled information gap activity

- T refers to the first question in activity 2b. "Do you work in a bank?" T points out the word bank asks if it is when, where or how word to elicit the question "Where do you work?". -Ss then complete remaining questions by themselves and check in pairs. -to check answers T has one student say one word from the sentence in a chain. -Ss do an information gap activity in pairs and groups. In this activity, students complete a text about the daily routine of a teacher by asking and answering present simple questions. -T divides the class into two groups (A and B) and gives a copy of worksheet A to Group A Ss and worksheet B to Group B. -Students work in a group to complete the questions, - T gives each Ss the answer key to check their questions -T pairs Ss A and B together and sits them back to back. Ss ask their partner the questions and fill in the gaps on their worksheet. When Ss have asked all their questions, they check their answers and spelling in pairs. -if there is extra time Ss can write sentences of their own and ask a partner to answer.
