To provide practice of language used for making polite requests in the context of planes
Procedure (45-59 minutes)
* As 2 groups - competition, Sts find the sentence "please is the magic word." on the board. * Ss discuss why it is the magic word. and when we use it. .
* Ss complete the dialogues by filling in the speech gaps. * Ss work in pairs and discuss. * T. gives feedback (possible answer key).
* Ss decide if "Open the door!" is polite or rude. They figure out how it can be a (polite) request in pairs. T FB by the help of CCQs.
* As two groups Ss elicit the sentences in which people are making requests and their responds from the paragraphs on the walls, then write them on the board. * The group which can write more sentences wins. * Sts categorise them in their group. T. gives FB (answer key). * Ss decide the answers agreeing to the request and not agreeing. FB answer key. * Ss notice the difference between polite and rude intonation. Then they listen and repeat.
* Ss find five mistakes in the dialogue and correct them in pairs. * Ss listen to the requests. Write "Yes" if they are polite and "No" if they are not. Discuss them in pairs. * FB (Answer key).
* As 2 teams Ss find a name for their team. * 2 people from each team choose a picture from the bag. * Quickly decide and make as many requests as possible related to the word on the picture. When they can no longer think of any more requests associated with that picture they shout "we are done" the round is over. The group who can make more requests on a picture, scores.
* Ss think of an airport and where they are flying. * In pairs, they write a dialogue taking place there and they are making requests. * They are going to role-play after they finish, and then they put them on the walls.
