Procedure (37-56 minutes)
Begin by greeting ss, then go straight to the board and draw 4 small pictures: an octopus, a mouse, an apple, and a rainbow. Lead ss to understand that these pictures spell out O-M-A-R through hints. Ask students to take out a piece of paper and draw their name using a picture for each letter. Emphasize that they should not write any letters. Give students a few minutes to go around the class and 'decode' their classmates names. SS with the most names may get a prize.
T introduces himself again; begins a slide show with pictures of himself in situations that bring him happiness / have caused him to be happy. T continues to show pictures (his friends, family, pets). T explains things that can make people happy. T asks ss, "What are other things that are not pictured that can lead to happiness?"
Pair students based on seating and ask them to make a list of 6-8 things they think make people most happy in life. Through questioning, collect main themes of Happiness from student pairs and write them on board.
T brings up an exercise with vocabulary terms and pictures to help SS with reading. T hands out Vocabulary matching exercise to ss. T checks to make sure students understand the exercise and then goes over answers on white board.
T hands out a copy of Pg.4 of "Face2Face" to ss. T asks them to pair up with the person behind/in front of them, then read the intro text "The secret of Happiness", then talk to each other and discuss Q2A, "How did the scientists make their top ten list?" T will then ask selected ss to share their findings with the class.
T collects students in the center of the room and arranges tables in a circle, T then places a potential "reason" (written on A4 paper) on each table:Genetics, Being Married, Friends and Family, Not wanting more than what you've got (contentment) Helping others, Religion, Being attractive, Growing old, Money, Intelligence. SS will stand in front of the theme they think is the leading cause of happiness. T then calculates the largest group and puts the "reason" on the board with the recognition of being 'TOP reason'. T will continue through the list until a ranking has been established. Students return to their seats
T will hand out the article from Pg. 113 of Face2Face: "The secret of happiness" to ss. SS will read the article & compare the list from the article with the list from the ranking survey on the board and see which are the same and which are different.
T will ask ss, "What was surprising about the order in the text?" T will ask students if they "agree or disagree" with the findings in the study. Are there any rankings that they strongly disagree with and why?
T will select students at random to speak. T asks ss, "What made you happy in the past?" T asks ss, "What is making you happy now?" T asks ss, "What do they think will bring you happiness in the future?
