Procedure (45-65 minutes)
T moves around the class saying Hi I'm John. Try some other phrases like "how are you?" "do you work or are you a student?"
T asks what are they saying? hand out the pictures, ss try to imagine what the conversations are together with a partner. Then play the recording and identify which is which. Hand out the texts and listen again. Checking the answers.
Handout the table showing equivalent phrases. We can add in here "good evening" a bit more formal. Role-play with recording 2 sound effects; disco, (group of three) doorbell. psycho motel, pensioners on the street.
in groups think of questions people ask in situation A. T elicits some questions and writes up on board. ss should make copies of these to carry with them...
Give out name cards. Students mingle about and ask and answer questions.
T models the words on the table and drills them then add these words in the right place: name is thanks my we more difficult: juice cabbage they police man buy
The question here is just "what is this?" T gives out between pairs the symbol/ pictures for all the vowels and diphthongs. This is a sort of guessing game...what's the word? Test of vocabulary.
