Upper-intermediate level

Description

In this lesson, students will review different types of get-together, such as a celebration meal, a housewarming party, a school reunion, etc. They will also practice phrases used with have (a date, a meeting) and make (a meal). Students will read a text and do a Reading Comprehension activity. They will also be engaged in speaking about their memorable get-together in small groups.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and scan reading practice using a text about getting together in 21st century style

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and review of words related to get-together: a dinner party, a celebration meal, a school reunion, a conference...

Procedure

Warmer (2-3 minutes) • To get students interested in the topic of the lesson

Start by asking students how often they meet their friends, what days, what they do, etc. Use this discussion to elicit the meaning of the verb get together and the noun get-together.

Lead-in/ Vocabulary (5-6 minutes) • To set the context and to introduce events that are typical get-togethers

Set the activity. Ask students to copy list B and then write appropriate people from list A in each category. Note: there may be several answers. Then students discuss in pairs. The teacher gives an answer key and WC FB.

Vocabulary task #2 (5-6 minutes) • To clarify the use of have, make, go on and attend with the events

In task 2 students need to write the events from the B section in exercise 1 in appropriate section, e.g. they need to decide if it is used with have, make, go on or attend. Will do demo so they are clear how to do it. To check answers they will be given an answer key.

Speaking practice #1 (6-7 minutes)

Check that students understand that a get-together is an informal event. Give them time to think about their descriptions individually. Then divide them into small groups and ask to describe their events, and encourage students to ask each other questions for more information. Give regular time checks so that all students get a chance to speak. For feedback, ask each group which get-together sounded the most fun, interesting, etc.

Reading task #1 (7-8 minutes) • Elicit

In pairs, students will make a list of ways people can do the following things: - get to know new people - get in touch with old friends - meet a future partner Then they compare their lists with other students. Elicit ideas and write them on the board.

Scanning - reading for detail (5-6 minutes)

Give the text to the students and ask to find how many ideas that we wrote on the board were mentioned in the text. Also, give them a list of new words with their definitions. Allow students time to read the article. Check as a whole class. Drill pronunciation of the new words.

Post-reading (9-10 minutes) • To discuss the ideas from the text

Give students questions that they need to discuss in pairs.
