Main Aims

  • To practice on Unreal Conditionals 2 in the context of News Stories

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide writing and speaking accuracy in second conditional 'If' sentences.

Procedure

Lead-in (10-12 minutes) • Activate students' Schemata

- T will refer back to the previous lesson by using a sentence from the previous reading lesson. - That sentence includes unreal conditionals 2. - T will start asking questions about the meaning and form of this sentence: e.g. the sentence is : " If we had decent living conditions, this wouldn’t be necessary" the questions will be as following: * Q1: Do the prisoners have nice living condition? - Ans: No. * Q2: Are they talking about the present time or the past? - Ans: Present. * Q3: So why do we use the past form of the verb? - Ans: To show that it is not real. - T will ask the students a question ( model sentences on WB) : * What would you do if you found a wallet on the street? - T will elicit the answer from the students , and will write their answers on the board to make sure that they have understood the meaning of the if clause 2. - T will do a timeline under the sentence: If ------------------------ main (simple past) (infinitive) - T will mention that If conditionals are: * imaginary/ unreal ( and they use the past from to show that) * It refers to present time

Eliciting (7-10 minutes) • Understand the meaning of "unreal conditionals".

- T will show the students a matching activity, by sticking the matching the clauses on the board. - T will put the Ss into pairs and get them to discuss the correct matching answers. - T will ask the Ss if they can notice any difference between the sentences which had if-clause first, and the ones had it second. -T will show the Ss that clauses can switch, i.e. if-clause first with a comma or second without it.

Drilling (10 minutes) • exemplify a specific grammatical item, help the Ss improve pronunciation

- T will show the Ss HO, and explain what should they do to solve ex1.and ex.2 - Ss in groups to solve the questions. - Before doing ex.3 , T will drill a few sentences with proper intonation (rising for the first clause, then falling). e.g. (loudly )If I have a million dollars, I would stop working(falling). (loudly) If I have a horse, I would ride it every day (falling). - T will ask Ss for examples

Forming (5 minutes) • To present the second conditionals

T- will present the If conditional 2 form and will give examples: If +S+Simple Past.... , S+ would + infinitive e.g. If I earn a lot of money, I would buy a new car.

More Practicing (10-15 minutes) • make sure that Ss understood the lesson properly

- Ss will do ex3 in pairs. - Ss will ask their peers questions that include the conditional if . - If T will have extra time , T could get Ss to do sentence chaining in small groups. e.g. The first sentence is 'If I won the lottery, I would buy a new car'. then they have to start a new sentence with the 2nd clause ' If I bought a new car, I would drive across all of Turkey'. - T will perform delayed error- correction as necessary.
