TP 5 - Speaking
Elementary level

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide speaking fluency practice in the context of talking about free time activities.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of frequency, activities

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I'm going to open the class with very basic questions. The first is, "What are you doing this weekend?" The second is, "Will you be with your friends or family? Why or why not?" My response will be that I'm going to a music festival, and that I will be going with friends because the music will be too loud for my family. This will be slide 1 of my Google Slides.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

I will expand on weekend activities here, and say, "On weekends, I sometimes go bike riding. I often meditate and take pictures, too. I always listen to music and clean."

Useful Language (8-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

In this section I will highlight the words never, sometimes, always, and often for the students.

Productive Task(s) (18-20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

I have 3 productive tasks lined up for this section, each lasting about 5 minutes. 1.) Use frequency adverbs never, sometimes, always, and often, to explain what you do on weekends. 2.) Write as many activities as you can that you do on weekends. I will share and use the following Google Doc links for the students to type their activities into them. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1YmlzkcBNXBdbkDFho8MTuvmxxaWVBFCA4NeEr5tnrRw/edit https://docs.google.com/document/d/1MFh3iShsPlOmYtEuvvPFruplkZb37INtT11Lb5vv9to/edit https://docs.google.com/document/d/14HxybST91QppF7YtAmIzDgUm-DvW3QdOb9Wyq8Z-YH8/edit 3.) Discuss which activities you like to do with your friends.

Feedback and Error Correction (8-10 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

For this section I'll be using real and direct examples that I heard during the breakout sessions from the students. I'll type into one of the Google Docs to write out the incorrect format and then type out the corrected statement.
