Description

SS will practice speaking in the context of firsts.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide SS the opportunity for fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of firsts

Subsidiary Aims

  • To improve SS listening skills by having SS ask questions and elicit responses from other SS
  • To provide fluency speaking practice in the use of sentence starters and linking words in the context of first times.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T asks SS " Do you have a good memory?" T nominates 2-3 SS to answer T shares whiteboard to write a few SS answers T asks " how many can remember the first time you....." - traveled alone/abroad -rode a bike -met someone important in your life -took an English lesson -went shopping for something major (house,car,bed) Whole class discussion

Content preparation (3-5 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through listening

T tells SS they are going to listen to a person speak a first time for them. T Sends SS a link to a forms task where they will answer two questions about the audio T asks SS to read the questions T instructs SS to answer questions individually they will have 2 minutes to answer the question T asks SS ICQs "will you work alone or in pairs?"(alone)"how much time do you have?"(2mins) T plays audio (2.9 Helen) T asks SS to check in pairs T replays audio if necessary Monitor Feedback if necessary

Language Preparation (10-14 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

T plays audio a second time T asks SS to listen to audio one more time. (1min) T asks SS to complete google form and submit in pairs (5min) T asks ICQs " how much time do you have?" (5mins) " do you work alone or in pairs ?" (pairs) "when you finish, do you submit the form?" (yes) T asks SS to discuss answers in pairs via BOR Monitor T model pronunciation if necessary OCFB (3-5mins)

Productive Task(s) (15-18 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice fluency in a discussion

T catches SS attention "okay.." T tell SS we will work in pairs T writes on the board "Important firsts.." T nominates SS to give 1 important first for them or for the world " the first phone call" " the first wheel" T writes ideas on the board. T asks SS to talk about important firsts with a partner ( 5 min) T tells SS to consider the following questions : Where/when did this happen? how old were you when this happened? who was with you? how did you feel before/after? T asks ICQs "How much time do you have?" "will you talk alone or with a partner? " T breaks ss into groups BOR T sets BOR timer to 5 min for ss discussion T monitors BOR closes and T asks SS to pair with someone different and discuss the following Questions: Which was the funniest story? Which was the strangest story ? Which was the saddest story? T gives SS 8 minutes to discuss in pairs T asks ICQs How much time do you have ? (8min) T opens and sets BOR timer to 8mins T monitors T offers help with instructions if necessary.

Feedback and Error Correction (3-4 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language
