Description

In this lesson, students practise scan reading, skimming and reading for detailed comprehension by finding information about numbers, building the text, and correcting the false statements in the context of " World Heritage Sites".

Materials

Main Aims

  • To practice skimming and reading for detailed comprehension of a text about a world heritage site.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice of - Wh questions and speaking fluently and accurately

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ss play the game "Hangman" ( natural side) T elicits examples for cultural sites and natural sites.

Pre-Reading (5-8 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Ss work in pairs. Ss order the scrambled cards and find the title of the text. ( Great Smoky Mountains National Park ) Ss look at the pictures and guess which one is "Great Smoky Mountains National Park". Ss writes prompt sentence on the board to help. ( I think this one is the picture.)

While-Reading #1 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

Ss sit in island form. Ss put the sentences in order and build the text. Ss visit other islands and check each other orders. T provides FB. ( answer key )

While-Reading #2 (12-15 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

Ss work in pairs. Ss read the false statements about the text. Ss find the true information and correct the statements. T writes promt sentences on WB. ( I think this is the true sentence, what do you think?) T monitors and provides help if necessary. T provides FB. (answer key)

Post-Reading (12-15 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Ss order the cards and build sentences on the floor. Ss match the questions and answers. T checks the meaning of -wh quesitons. CCQs: Which word helps us to ask about time? ( When) Which word can we use to ask about places ? (Where) Do we use "what" or "how much" to ask about money? ( How much) Which word helps me to ask about name of the place? (What) Ss drill the sentences. Ss work in pairs. Ss ask, answer and complete their charts. T monitors and provides delayed error correction.
