Description

In this lesson, students will understand what does crossroad means , and will have some tasks to understand the meanings well. Students as well will read for gist to get specific information.They will discuss some people's problems, and decide who has the most difficult decision to make.

Materials

Abc WB, audio CD, HO, Visual Picture

Main Aims

  • To read for gist, in order to get specific details and information about the main ideas of the text.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To let the students listen and read for both gist and comprehension reasons.

Procedure

Lead-in (2-5 minutes) • Activate students' Schemata

- T will refer back to the previous lesson and ask the students about dilemmas meaning. - T will ask Ss what they think at a crossroad means and try to elicit it, T will guide them to the meaning if they can't come up with it.

Reading (7-10 minutes) • Practicing reading for gist and reading for details

- T will tell the Ss that they are going to read about three people who are at a crossroad. - T will ask them who they think has the most difficult decision to make, then T will give them the reading from Speaking ex1 and will let the Ss read to decide who has the most difficult decision . - T will put the Ss into pairs and get them to discuss their ideas and give reasons for these. - T will take some general FB on what they thought.

Discussion and personalisation (3-5 minutes) • Reading for gist to get the main idea of the context

- Ss will focus on the questions in ex2 and will discuss them in small groups. - T will monitor them , but will not interfere and will take some general FB on what they talked about.

Preparation to listen (5-7 minutes) • Set the context of the text and have an idea about it

- T will show the Ss the picture for the listening and ask questions about it ( where are the people? who do you think they are? how do you think they feel?) - T will elicit some ideas and the explain that the characters names are Derek and Dave, and that Derek has a problem. - T will get the Ss in pairs to discuss what they think his problem might be. - T will take some FB and write a few ideas on the WB but will not confirm or reject anything yet.

Listening (10 minutes) • Ss will get to practice their receptive skills of listening for detail

- T will tell them that they are going to listen to see if their ideas are correct. - T will play the first part of the listening only. - Ss will listen to identify Derek's problem and see if their predictions are correct. then T will pause the CD and get the Ss in groups to compare their answers . - T will take some FB and see which of their ideas on WB were correct or even close to the right answer.

Listening 2 (10-15 minutes) • Ss will get to practice their receptive skills of listening for detail

- T will tell the Ss that they will listen again , and will focus them on the questions in ex2 (questions 1-4 only) and will ask them if they can remember what they heard before. - T will let the Ss work together in groups to try to complete qus 1-4. - T will take some WC FB, if they get all the answers will move on , if not T will let them listen to the first section again and check their answers. - Then T will pause the CD again and take the WC FB and check their answers. - T will ask the students about what they think Derek will decide & get some ideas. - focus the Ss on questions from 5-8 and tell them to read them through to make sure they know what the're listening for. - Then T will play the rest of the CD, Ss will listen and note the answers for questions from 5-8. - T will get the Ss to check their answers in pairs - T will take the WC FB and deal with any answers they missed by reading the relevant parts.

Freer speaking (2-3 minutes) • Ss will get to practice their productive skills of speaking in the context

- Get Ss in small groups to discuss the question in ex4, take some WC FB.
