Description

In this lesson the students are going to learn and practice reading about people and their likes and dislikes. They will practice reading for gist and and reading for details. Then they will learn how to talk about their likes and dislike using the sub-skill of speaking.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and scan reading practice using a text about first date in the context of friendship

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of vocabulary in the context of friendship
  • To provide practice of lexical set of routine activities in the context of friendship

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will start my lesson by asking students about the "things" we look for in a person before making friendship. Possible answers, profession, likes, dislikes etc. Then I will introduce the theme that is about friendship and dating.

Pre-Reading (5-7 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

The students will do a short matching exercise on some of the possible troublesome vocabulary, like journalist, rock music, jazz music, pets, waitress, fast food.

While-Reading #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

The students will skim read the handout and will answer the simple question, "What is it about?" Then in pairs they will read about two different persons and will find out specific information about both the persons. Student A will read about Jo, and student B will read about Susie.

While-Reading #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed reading task

The students will read through the three paragraphs and will respond to the more detailed questions.

Post-Reading (2-3 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

The students will think about one of their friends and using the list of his/her likes and dislikes, they will introduce their friend to their partners.

Free practice and delayed error correction (5-8 minutes) • To allow students practise asking and giving information about a third person

The students will introduce their friend (third person) to on of their class fellows. They will use productive skill of speaking. The teacher will monitor them and will do delayed error correction.
