Telling The Time
Beginner level

Description

In this lesson students will learn how to tell the time based on the vocabulary exercise including diagrams. First they will review what they know from the previous lesson and then they will have an exercise in which they will decide whether the written time and the clock matches with eachother. They will have a listening practice about the word stress in the vocabulary they've just learnt. They will work in pairs to say different versions of time. They will learn what "am & pm" are. Then they will have a speaking activity in which they will tell what times are morning,evening, etc. for them. After that they will have a speaking activity to tell their favourite time of the day. Finally they will complete sentences with "good morning, good afternoon, etc. Depending on the time they'll play a game on the board. I'll write many differen times on the board. The students -as two groups in line- point to the time I say.

Main Aims

  • To provide the students with clarification and practice of telling the time

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide students with speaking activities about telling the time by paying attention on the word stress and pronunciation.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I'll begin with a reminding of the previous lesson. Students will answer the questions : Do you remember my name? How old am l? What do l like? After that they'll see some pictures of wall clocks. l'll tell them I have a collection and show the PPT.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide the students with new way of telling the time.

The students will see the diagram with the new vocabulary of telling the time. They will practice how to tell the time in a different way. They'll do drilling one by one and as whole class.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the new vocabulary of telling the time

The students will have a handout in which they'll tick the correct ones and they'll put cross the the incorrect ones.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of asking and telling the time

The students will see the mixed cards of asking and answering the time. They'll try to put it in order. They will have cards with the times they'll ask and answer with both versions of the time.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check their knowledge of day, night, afternoon, morning

They will fill in the blanks with the words given to form good morning, good evening, good afternoon, good evening, good night.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check their knowledge of day, night, afternoon, morning

They will see the picture on the board and have a discussion about "What times are morning, evening, afternoon?" They will ask and answer questions in groups.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with a freer practice of telling and talking about the time

The students will have a discussion in which they'll tell their favourite time of the day to the other group members.
