Description

Students are given the chance to learn vocabulary items about different types of relationships, particularly family relationships. They are then supposed to read a text regarding a special type of relationship

Materials

Abc Global Intermediate course book Unit 2, pages 20 and 21,multiple choice hand-outs,

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of family and relationships in the context of Family
  • To provide gist and scan reading practice using a text about White Teeth in the context of Family

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification in the context of family
  • To provide product writing practice of a question and answers, a paragraph in the context of family

Procedure

warmer (7-9 minutes) • to engage students' attention to the context of the lesson

The teacher introduces the topic using the projector and makes sure that it is clearly understood by everyone. He then presents some typical contexts for relationships and asks students to talk about their real-life experiences of relationships in pairs or groups of 3. The teacher monitors.

input 1 (6-8 minutes) • introduction to some relationship vocabulary

Students are asked to do exercise 1 in the vocabulary section to clarify the differences between the pairs of words presented to them

Input 2 (6-8 minutes) • Introduction to some expressions regarding relationships

Students are asked to refer to exercise 2 to match sentence halves. They then receive the answers by guessing what the answers are in a hand-out given by the teacher. They are then asked to write real examples using the expressions they have learnt.

reading engagement (2-3 minutes) • prepare their minds in context to do the upcoming reading.

Students are asked to jot down some main reasons for family disputes in groups, monitored by the teacher, however, their answers are not checked in the class.

Gist reading and listening (3-5 minutes) • Asking them to write the summary of the text in one sentence.

Students read and listen to the text to form a summary of what they read their own words in one sentence. They are then asked to compare their ideas IN PAIRS.

Scan reading (4-5 minutes) • to answer the True, False, Don't know questions

Students are asked to work in groups of 3 to answer the questions in exercise 3 and check their answers.

Writing (6-7 minutes) • writing their own inferences

Students are given the option to write their own personal answers depending on their own assumptions of the text and are then asked to hand over the paper to the teacher which is going to be corrected and returned the next session.
