1A Days of the Week + Writing practice
Grade 1 level

Description

In this lesson, students will review and practice the days of the week and practice writing letters that have straight lines.

Materials

Abc Capital straight letters 1
Abc days of the week

Main Aims

  • To provide product writing practice of a capital letters in the context of days of the week

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide review of the days of the week

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

In random order, write different letters of the alphabet on the board one at a time (capital letters only) and see who/how many Ss can name the letter. For an added challenge for the higher level Ss, see if anyone can name something that begins with that letter.

Highlighting (5-7 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Write the letters I, T, F, E, H, A, and Y on the board. One by one ask what each letter is and see if a S would like to come to the board and demonstrate writing the letter on the board. After pointing out what the S did correctly and adjusting what the student needed to change, ask for a couple other volunteers to try. Do this for each letter. If there are several Ss struggling with any letter, have the WC draw the letter together in the air a few times. Reinforcing that we always start at the top and draw down for vertical line and move from right to left for horizontal lines.

Controlled Practice (5-7 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Ss will practice writing the 7 given capital letters by writing each letter 8 times. Remind the students to write slowly and carefully.

Clarification (1-2 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

If you noticed any common errors in their writing, note them on the board and go over them with the WC having the Ss practice the letter or letters a few times in the air or on their desk with their fingers.

Exposure (4-6 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Ask the class, "what day is today?" "what day was yesterday?" what day is tomorrow?" You can point at the Class Calendar near the door to help the Ss out. Have the Ss practice answering the question What day is today? with the answer: "Today is Tuesday." Open the "7 Days of the Week Song" by the Learning Station (2:17) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3tx0rvuXIRg&themeRefresh=1 (They watched and sang along to this song only once before in my class on Thursday, so they may need to hear/sing this more than once.)

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

First demonstrate on the board what to do by writing "D_ _ S OF THE W_ E K." Ask the Ss, what letters are missing. (You can write the letters I, E, F, T, H, A, and Y on the board if they need a hint.) Then, explain they will use the word box to complete the days of the week by writing the missing letters.

Free Practice (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Give the Ss a piece a blank paper. Write the letters I, E, F, H, T, A, and Y on the board. The Ss will chose at least one letter, write the letter really big on the paper and turn it into something else. For example, they could write a giant T and make it into a tree or H into a house. Whatever they draw doesn't need to begin with that letter but it could. They could even turn the letter Y into a face.
