Abc Realia

Main Aims

  • To provide specific information using a text about ghostwriting during the listening practice
  • To provide fluency and accuracy in the speaking practices by giving opinions in the context of books and writers

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and review of the words related to the topic of books and writers.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (6-8 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T divides students into 6 groups including 4 people by giving them six written words related to the books and writers, 1) Novel 2) Drama/Play 3) Poems 4) Fairytales 5) Fiction/Non-fiction 6) Pseudonym and wants the Ss who have same words sit together to create a group. The meanings of these words are discussed and some novels, poems, plays are given to the each group for them to decide the kind of the book they have on their desks. For the word "pseudonym", pictures of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and its introduction part are shown as Lewis Carrol is not the real name of the author.

Productive Task(s) (13-16 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

With the first speaking exercise before playing the short audio T asks each group to discuss and predict the meaning of the word "ghostwriter", then to choose the relevant definition given in the first example. Later, Ss will explain their reason to choose their specific answer. Afterwards, the audio is being played so that Ss can check their answers. During the 2nd speaking exercise Ss discuss the given questions for 5 min. in groups and then T hears their opinions. In the last exercise T will use the projector to reflect the pictures of Andrew Crofts' books. So that Ss would be able to discuss the most interesting one by looking at the WB. Since they will not lower their heads to the desks to look at the coursebook page, they will be more awake and alert.

Useful Language (5-7 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for the coming receptive and productive tasks

Afterwards, T will reflect definitions and example sentences regarding the vocabulary exercise and ask Ss to match these sentences with the definition on the WB.

While-Reading/Listening (5-7 minutes) • To make the Ss pick up the specific information

In the 1st listening exercise Ss will listen to how Andrew Crofts became a ghostwriter and choose the correct explanation from the given ones. In the second exercise they will listen rest of the interview and choose the reasons why the writer enjoys doing his job. In the meantime, students will hear the vocabulary they learned in this session.

Feedback and Error Correction (6-8 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' understanding of the spoken language and make them use it

Ss are going to peer-check their answers with the other members of their groups. Following this, T will ask Ss to think about what they would write, if they were a writer and share their ideas with the class. T praises students for participating in the activities and showing effort during the lesson.
