TP5 Productive Skills - Speaking
Upper Intermediate/Advanced level

Description

In this lesson, students talk about their achievements by telling personal anecdotes and making sure to use informal target language.

Materials

Main Aims

  • Students will be introduced to and provided practice for speaking for fluency in the context of giving an informal talk about a life achievement

Subsidiary Aims

  • Students will develop and practice the listening and reading sub skill of scanning in relation to informal language and life achievements.
  • Students will practice and develop new informal language expressions.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T will display Google Slides with big questions and ‘Life Achievements' verb/noun collocations. T facilitates verb-noun collocation matching while eliciting Ss responses to achievement-related questions.

Exposure (6-8 minutes) • To provide a model of expected language use in coming tasks through listening.

T offers background on the lesson’s text, displays questions/text, and shares questions in chat. T instructs Ss to quickly read to find the answer to two questions: What is the writer's biggest achievement? Why is it so significant to him/her? Ss quickly read and scan the text for answers. T calls on Ss for answers. T will explain that today Ss will focus on and listen for informal language that shows the speaker buying time, or emphasizing/highlighting a point. T will provide task instructions and play audio. Ss will listen to the audio while completing the gap fill. T will replay the audio and instruct Ss to double-check their answers. T will reveal gap fill answer key

Useful Language (8-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

T will provide instructions and link for the Jam Board that addresses usage and meaning. Students will join break out rooms to complete Jamboard. T will ask follow-up CCQs. T will provide instructions and link for the Google Form that addresses Form. T will provide instructions and link for the Google Form That addresses pronunciation and stress. T will facilitate choral and individual drilling for keywords/sentence stress.

Productive Task(s) (15-18 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

T will provide task instruction and demo the writing/speaking steps of the task. T will remind students to use target language. Ss will take 5 minutes to write as much as they can using the informal target language previously discussed. Ss will join BORs and take turns with partners to share their achievements before rejoining the main room to share with the class.

Feedback and Error Correction (1-2 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

T will point out good use of language and praise students in areas they excelled. T will point out incorrect use of language and ask Ss for way to correct it.
