Procedure (32-45 minutes)
Teacher sticks some pictures about awkward situations around the class and asks students to find a relationship between the pictures after checking them.The students are allowed to discuss the common point of the pictures. The teacher writes ‘Awkward social situations’ on the board.
The teacher introduces the character Bella and gives the handouts.The students are asked to read the dialogues and discuss where she is and why the situations are awkward. (ex.1,pg.81)
The teacher introduces some phrases and words that might be unfamiliar. Then the students are divided into 5 groups. The teacher gives each group a sheet of paper with ‘a speech bubble’. They are asked to write their suggestions about what she could say in a polite way.
The teacher hands out the tapescripts and plays the recording. She asks them to check their answers for each section and think about if their suggestions in exercise 1 were the same or different. Then the teacher elicits the unknown phrases, if needed. (ex2.pg.81)T:7.6 The teacher plays the recording for the second time. The students are asked to pay attention for polite intonation which is followed by a choral drilling. The teacher plays the recording and pauses after each phrase for students to repeat. (ex.2,pg.81) T:7.7
The students are asked to write and rehearse their dialogues, using some of the phrases in the transcript on page 168. They are allowed to work in pairs. Each pair writes dialogue about only one situation.
Each pair is asked to act out their dialogues for the class. (ex.3/b,pg.81)
