Pull out ideas of travel from the Ss. Complete the list of logos with a logo for The CouchSurfers Project and introduce the topic idea.

Pre-listening (5-10 minutes) • To help students understand vocabulary used in the lesson

Couch Surfing/Couch Surfer Begin with pictures of a couch and of a surfer Elicit the words and possible meaning of couch surfer EXPLAIN – couch surfers sleep on a couch you do not own in an apartment you do not own – You might or you might not know the owner of the couch. Traveler - Refer back to the logos of cars and planes and ask “What do you do on these things?” Travel – and who travels? Local People – Recall logos of Migros and speak about the local market. At a market does food come form near or far? At a grocery is the food from near or far? Far ... Use this idea to elicit “local” and speak about people that live close to an area are local. Those that are not local do not live in the area you live. For further understanding ask the area of Istanbul they are staying. Explain local using this concept. Available – Use the idea of open hotel rooms – “Do you have any rooms ....... (available)” Elicit the word from the students. Stay Vs. Live – Ask they question when you go to a hotel do you stay there or live there? Then ask them if they stay or live in their home? Does a traveller like to stay home or see other places? Does a couch surfer stay with others or on his couch or on their couch? Do I live at a hotel or in my home? Can I stay at a hotel with NO rooms available? Do local people live far from where I am staying or close? Each word or word pairs will be written on the WB and Choral drilled with stress To check the understanding of all words students will do a matching exercise with a partner in their group. Students will match definitions working with a partner. Model the exercise by reading a word and asking their partner to find the answer Partner A will read a word and Partner B will find the definition provided.

While-listening (10-15 minutes) • To provide students with an introduction to the story and allow them to get a global understanding of the topic

Instruct the students, ICQ, and provide HO (Couch Surfers). Students will be given 5 minutes to work with partners to answer the questions on the handout. ICQ should involve the idea that these are their thoughts, no answers, what do they think? After the students have made a guess and answered the questions a recording will be played which gives them the answers. They are to listen alone and write the answers they hear to the 5 questions. They will now check with their partner the correct answers. after which final answers will be provided on the WB.

While-listening (3-5 minutes) • To look at the topic of the story with detailed reading

Students will be regrouped into groups of 4 by numbering. Three questions will be provided on the WB: 1. Who is the conversation between? 2. Where is the conversation taking place? 3. What are they talking about? Students will be asked to think based on the picture to predict these questions The recording will be played one time and the readers should listen for gist Understanding will be checked and FB given from classmates and the teacher

While Listening (10-12 minutes) • To look at the topic of the story with detailed reading

Instruct and ICQ for students to listen alone to the reading again. While listening they are to write down the rooms mentioned in the story, as well as the items found in the rooms. A HO (Detail Reading) will be provided for them to write the information. Teacher should monitor the class and play the recording again if students do not have all of the info. After playing the recording 2x the students will be asked to check their answers with a neighbor, and group members to be certain they have all the correct answers. To provide FB 2 students will be asked to fill in the blank to this document as it is on the WB. Lastly they will be instructed to match the items to the rooms in which those items were, and another student will be invited to the WB to complete this.

Post-Listening (5-15 minutes) • To provide a productive writing activity which will allow the students to gain knowledge of the lesson and provide for concept checking

Divide the room in half, surfers and hosts. As a mingling activity surfers are to find a host and ask if they can stay with them. The host will accept and tell the surfer what can be seen around town and what is near by. Partners will then switch and if time allows the activity will be repeated with new partners.
