In this lesson, listening is used to check the answers of the 'General Knowledge Quiz' on page 67.
Procedure (36-46 minutes)
Teacher pretends to chew gum and asks the students to guess what she’s doing. The teacher asks the students if chewing gum helps people in any way. They’re allowed to discuss the question in pairs. The teacher elicits a few ideas from the class.
The teacher asks the students to read the titles in ex.2 pg.66. The students are allowed to read the article in order to find the best title. After they give the correct answer, the teacher writes the best title on the board. The teacher also does some examples to remind articles.The students are asked to complete the ex. 3 pg.66. The teacher gives the answer key. The students check the answers in pairs.
The students are asked to read through the information and find the examples in the text. The teacher checks the answers with the whole class. (ex.1/ Analysis 1) The students are asked to read through Language Summaries A 1. The teacher writes ‘quantity’ ,’ordinals’,’superlatives’ and ‘common adjectives’ on the board. Afterwards, the students are divided into 4 groups and given a list of phrases. Then they are asked to place the phrases correctly on the board . (ex.2 Analysis 1)
The teacher hands out the ‘General Knowledge Quiz’. The students are asked to complete the gaps in the questions and correct answers. The students work in pairs. (pg.67)
The teacher plays the recording in order to get the students to check their answers in pairs.
The teacher draws a table with three columns (definite article/ no article / exceptions) .The students are asked to check the questions in the quiz and discuss if the categories of place and time have got exceptions. When the table is complete, they are asked to read Language Summary A3 on pg.149.
