Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of Passive Voice in the context of Birthday parties and inventions

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a Conversation in the context of Birthday parties and inventions

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

In this stage I will talk about a surprise birthday party I had using passive voice.

Exposure (5-7 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

I will then ask my students about a birthday party they had. I will then ask them some questions about their birthday using passive questions.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

In this stage I will write some of the sentences that my students have made in the correct form on the board to draw their attention to the TL.

Clarification (5-7 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

I will clarify the meaning by asking some CCQs from thought experiments. One thought experiment will be regarding a stolen car where we are not aware who did the action, and for the second one it will be about burnt food. I will then elaborate that you can add "by x" if we want to mention the doer. Then I will elicit the structure of a passive sentnece for my students.

Controlled Practice (4-5 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

The students are going to do exercise 10c-a on page 145 in the grammar bank in 2 minutes then we will check the answers with the whole class.

Free Practice (10-13 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

The students will talk about their favorite inventions in groups of 2-3. They will talk about: 1. By whom was it invented 2. When was it invented 3. How has society changed because of it?
