Description

In this lesson, students practice speaking skills through a role-play of meeting a famous person and asking questions, and they practice listening skills through listening to dialogues. The lesson starts with a role-play of famous people and their fans. This is followed by discussing which famous person the students actually want to meet. After that, students listen to two dialogues and they answer some questions and complete some sentences.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and specific information listening practice using a text about invitations and suggestions in the context of a phone conversation

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of meeting a famous person

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To introduce students to the topic of going out with a friend and inviting someone out

T writes on the board, "When you want to go out with a friend/ a person you do not know well, is it difficult to ask them out? Why? Why not?" ,"How do you ask them?", and "What happens if they say no?". Sts discuss in pairs. T offers scaffolding if needed. T conducts feedback from two or three individual students.

Role Play: I Am Your Big Fan. (14-16 minutes) • To practice speaking by asking questions

T divides the class into two groups. One group consists of famous people, and the other group consists of their fans. T explains the role-play activity and distributes the handouts. Sts take some time to prepare the questions (the fans group) and the answers (the famous people group). T explains to 'famous people' that they do not have to give correct information. Sts start the activity. In pairs, a fan asks a question and a celebrity answers. T tries to add more enthusiasm to the activity by asking the sts to take actual selfies if the famous person says yes. Sts exchange roles and repeat the same task. T conducts feedback by asking some sts whether the famous person accepted to meet them again or not. T can also ask about their impression about the famous person.

Which famous person? (3-5 minutes) • To practice speaking about an imaginary situation

T explains the task of speaking ex1 p42 and distributes HO. Sts discuss in pairs. T can possibly change pairs. T conducts feedback by asking some sts which famous people they would like to meet.

Listening for gist and for details (15-17 minutes) • To practice listening to the main idea and the specific details of the audio clip

T shows HO to sts and explains the first task ex 1.1. Sts have to listen and answer 3 questions about the gist of the listening.T distributes HO and plays the audio clip 1.38 once. T gives a moment to sts to answer the questions. T asks sts to check in pairs. T explains the second task ex1.2. Sts listen to the audio clip and mark the sentences true or false. T plays the same aduio track again. Sts check in pairs after they have listened. T repeats the procedure for ex 2.1 and 2.2. (Sts have to listen and answer 3 questions about the gist of the listening.T plays the audio clip 1.39 once. T gives a moment to sts to answer the questions. T asks sts to check in pairs). (T explains the second task ex 2.2. Sts listen to the audio clip and mark the sentences true or false. T plays the same aduio track again. Sts check in pairs after they have listened.) T gives instruction for the task in exercose 2 p42. Sts first try to guess the answers in pairs. Students listen and check their answers.

Wrap-up (2-4 minutes) • To highlight the difference between the two telephone conversations as the following lesson is going to be about functional language

T writes on WB, "Nancy&Sebastian vs. Sebastian&Jason). T asks sts to discuss in pairs how the two conversations were different.T does not conduct feedback as the answer to this will come in the functional lesson.
