Description

This lesson gives Ss to practise using the future forms from the previous lesson but widens up the context to think about personal goals and then a mock election campaign. It also links back to the previous lessons on being optimistic.

Main Aims

  • To give Ss practice in speaking for fluency through making an election speech.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To give Ss the opportunity to practise future prefect and continuous and future time phrases. To encourage Ss to think about how to make ideas seem optimistic.

Procedure

Lead-in (0-3 minutes) • To engage the learners about the elections and campaign speeches

1. Before class begins T writes categories on the board (crime, health care, childcare, leisure, the environment, transport, the economy, education) 2. T writes "The days of free medicine for everyone are just around the corner" on the WB. 3. T asks Ss "Which category does this belong to?" (healthcare)

Pre-writing (0-5 minutes) • To brainstorm and use the target language.

1. T puts Ss in pairs. 2. T tells Ss they will do a similar activity. 3. T tells Ss to write 2 optimistic statements, each statement needs to be from a different category. ICQs: What are we doing? (Writing optimistic sentences) Are you doing it by yourself? (No, in pairs) How many sentences do you write? (2) Can they be from the same category? (No)

Elicit feedback (0-3 minutes) • To categorize the target language

1. T elicits sentences from groups. 2. Ss guess which category the sentence is from. ICQs: What are we listening to? (optimistic sentences) What do we do? (guess the category)

Writing (0-20 minutes) • To get students to complete Our Country in our own hands worksheet

1. T chests HO.T tells Ss "We are writing a campaign speech. There are 5 parts." 2. T tells Ss "Part 1 is the name of your political party." 3. T writes "Part 1: name of political party" on WB. 4. T tells Ss "Part 2 is introducing yourself and your party." 5. T writes "Part 2: introduction" on WB. 6. T elicits language from Ss. (My name is ____ and I am with the ____ party.) 7. T tells Ss "Part 3 is YOUR plan for your country" 8. T writes "Part 3: your plan for your country" on WB. 9. T elicits examples from Ss. 10. T elicits target language from Ss (My plan for our country is ____.) 11. T tells Ss to write 3 plans. 12. T writes "(3 examples)" on WB after the words "Part 3: your plan for your country" 13. T tells Ss "Part 4 is your election promises." 14. T writes "Part 4: election promises" on board. 15. T elicits examples from Ss. 16. T elicits target language from Ss (I promise I will _____) 17. T tells Ss to write 3 promises. 18. T writes "(3 examples)" on WB after the words "Part 4: election promises" 19. T tells Ss "Part 5 is your predictions for your country's future." 20. T writes "Part 5: predictions for country's future." 21. T elicits examples from Ss. 22. T elicits target language from Ss (Under my leadership, I know our country will _____.) 23. T tells Ss to write 3 predictions. 24. T writes "(3 examples)" on WB after the words "Part 5: predictions for country's future." 25. T tells Ss "Try and use all the categories if you can, minimum 5 ." 26. T tells Ss they have 12 minutes. ICQs: How many parts are you writing? (5) How many categories are there? (8) How many categories should you use? (All, minimum 5) In parts 3, 4 and 5 how many examples are you writing (3 for each, 9 total) How long do you have (12 minutes)

Rehearsal (0-7 minutes) • To practice the written speech

1. T tells Ss they will practice their speech. 2. T tells Ss to assign parts to each person (2 people, one person reads 2 parts, other person 3 parts) 3. T tells Ss that each person must do one of the longer parts (parts 3, 4, 5) - (2 people - one person reads part 1 and 2, one person reads 3, 4 and 5 is not allowed) 4. T elicits what tone they should use (Strong, friendly, confident, smart, successful, optimistic) 5. T gives Ss 5 minutes to practice. ICQs What are we doing? (Practicing) What do we have to do before we practice? (Know which part we are doing) How many parts do you do? (2 people - 1 person 2 parts, 1 person 3 parts) What can't you do? (One person can't just read parts 1 and 2, they need to read one of the longer parts) How should your voice sound (Strong, friendly, confident, smart, successful, optimistic)

Presentation (0-10 minutes) • For the groups of Ss to present speeches to the class.

1. T tells Ss it is time to present to the class. 2. T asks for volunteer to go first, if no volunteer, T picks strongest student. 3. Ss continue presenting until completed or until there is 3 minutes left to class. 4. T gives ballots to Ss to vote for their favourite candidate (Does a show of hands if short on time).

Feedback (0-2 minutes) • To give feedback to students on their performance.

1. T gives Ss praise. 2. T gives Ss feedback on general things they did wrong. 3. T announces election results.
