Procedure (30-45 minutes)
Introduce the topic of 'Capitals' by showing the pictures (using HO) of some capitals but do not call their names out. Ask ss questions, like: 'What are they? What are the names of these cities? Which countries are they in? Did you go there?'
Try to elicit meaning of the words, such as: create, political and geographical. For the word 'create' at first, show the picture where women work on designing and making clothes. Ask ss 'What are they doing on the picture?'. When ss are familiar with the word ask them to repeat it after you. After that write it down on the board and ask them which part of speech it is. Give examples of how we can use this word in sentences. For example, ' People create cloth. My brother creates computer programmes.' For the word 'geographical' use whiteboard. Draw a picture of Turkey and point that Ankara is in the middle of the map. They should answer that it is in the centre or middle of Turkey. After that ask ss if it is cultural position of Ankara on the map. They should give negative answer and you can say that it is a place, position on the map so it is a geographical position of Ankara. Drill the word with the ss. Write down 'geographical position' and 'geographical area or location. Ask ss to which part of speech the word belongs to. For the word 'political' ask ss questions, like ' Do you know Barak Obama? Who is he? Do you like politicians? Are there politicians in Ankara? Is there a government? Are there politicians in there? So Ankara is geographical, cultural and ....... then ss should go on with the word 'political' centre of Turkey. Drill the word with the ss and then write down on the board 'political centre, political system'. Ask ss to which part of speech the word belongs to.
Write on the board: What is created capital? What is the name of the city? What country is it in? After that tell ss that we are going to read a text about one capital city. They will have only 1 minute for reading. They need to answer the questions which are on the board. Ask ICQ if they understand what to do. Hand out the texts. After 1 minute ask ss to face the worksheets down and make them answer the questions from the board in pairs. After that ss can give answers as a whole group.
Tell ss that they are going to answer the questions from Ex. 3 on p.20, and for this they can have a look at the text as much as they think would be enough for them. Give them some time to do it. After that ask them to check the answers in pairs. Later on ask one of the students from each group to answer the questions. Add extra questions on the board, like: What is the population of Astana? When was Astana created? What does Astana mean in Kazakh language?
Ask ss to look at the power point presentation of Wh-questions. They look at the 1st slide. Ask them when we use each of the question words. Then present all Wh-questions. Ask them how we formulate these questions by pointing at the examples from the presentation. Ask ss to do Ex. 1 from p. 21. Give them 1 minute and ask ss to work in pairs. Tell ss that you are going to give the worksheets with 2 exercises about Wh-questions. Read the instructions on what they have to do with them. Give them 3-4 minutes and ask them to do it in pairs. Ask ICQ if needed. After that check the answers as the whole group.
Tell ss that they are going to read 2 different texts about the capitals in pairs. They do not show each others papers. After reading they have to answer the questions which are below the texts. You can write down the questions on the board so the ss will know which information they need to find. After that hand out the texts. After closed pair work, make some ss to answer the questions in open pairs. If there is enough time, do speaking from Ex. 1 on p.21. Write down statements on the board and ask ss what is important to them in a place they live in. They should put the items in order from 1 to 6, where 1 is very important and 6-least important.
