Description

In this lesson students learn how to write a complaint letter. The lesson starts with listening to the advertisement for the BrainBoost course and students have to listen for the specific details. Then, the buyer calls the company and complains about the product and service . In the next part, the buyer writes a complaint letter to the manager of the company. Students have to compare the spoken and written complaint. Finally, students have to write a complaint letter to the company and ask for refund of money.

Procedure

Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To get students' attention on the topic

Write BB in the middle of the board and ask students what it stands for.

Listening for specific detail (7-8 minutes) • To check their listening skill and get them prepared for the next stage ( the reason for complaint)

They will listen to the advertisement and answer the questions individually. Then, they compare their answers in pairs. Tell students that the sentences are what Phillip says not writes. Students read the things he says to the manager of company. They have to find out the reason of his dissatisfaction with what he has received.

Presentation (19-20 minutes) • To make out the difference between oral and written complaint.

Put students in pairs and ask them to underline what Phillip wrote that matches what he said. Elicit why the language types are different (exercise b). Ask Ss the purpose of each paragraph and the general format of the formal complaint letter.Get Ss to do exercise c (find the formal words in Phillip's letter) in pairs.

Vocabulary (5-6 minutes) • To find the phrases in ex. 4.

Put students in pairs to underline other useful phrases in writing a complaint letter. Elicit some examples and write on the board.

Controlled practice (7-8 minutes) • To write a complaint letter to a company and ask for refund.

Put Ss into pairs to think of four problems they had with language course they have bought. Elicit some example and write on the board. Then, ask them to write a complaint letter. Exchange letters among students to see each other's letter.
