Upper Intermediate level

Description

In this lesson, the learners are going to review future perfect and continuous. Their awareness will be extended. They will be given some reading passages, which will be followed by worksheets. Besides, the students will have enough time to talk to each other as a part of STT.

Materials

Abc Reading Passages
Abc Plain Paper

Main Aims

  • To review and extend Ss awareness' of future perfect and continuous, and give controlled and semi-controlled practice in them, in the context of future goals.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To give Ss practice in speaking for fluency.

Procedure

Lead-in/Presentation/Focus on Meaning (12-18 minutes) • To demonstrate a getting to know you activity. To set lesson context and engage students.

Ask Ss to look at the reading from the previous lesson and find out what the World Health Organisation hopes for 2020, and what health workers plans are for cure and prevention of polio. Encourage Ss to notice the target sentences - "Hopes are high that..." and "Health workers will be ...". Get these sentences onto the board. Ss use Grammar ex1 to think about meaning. After the demonstration and ICQs, QAs will help doing this procedure.

Focus on Form (7-9 minutes) • To draw Ss' attention to the forms, then clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language.

Ss use Grammar ex2 to think about meaning - they can do this in pairs/groups. In FB, highlight the form on the example sentences on the board.

Controlled Practice (5-8 minutes) • To prepare learners for more meaningful practice

Ask Ss what the situation is for AIDS - is it curable/preventable? - then they read p135 ex7 through and check without writing anything. Then Ss work in pairs/groups to complete ex7. (Maybe prepare and answer key for FB.)

Controlled Practice (5-8 minutes) • To prepare learners for more meaningful practice

Get Ss to notice the time phrases in ex7 - "By the year..." and "Over the next twenty years..." and notice which future form they are used with - perfect or continuous. Grammar ex3 - focus Ss on the "Vision 2020" text and ask what their goals are. Elicit a couple, then Ss complete the rest using future perfect or continuous. Take FB.

Semi-controlled practice/Personalisation/Speaking (10-15 minutes) • To provide the Ss with semi-controlled and free practice of the target language.

Ask Ss what their goals are for the future in health/job/family, etc. - Ss complete the blank areas in Speaking ex2 on their own. Monitor and help with form and accuracy. Before the lesson, prepare some of your own examples. Use these as a model for the instruction - and after the Ss have completed their work- to do some drilling. Drill full sentences and keep them natural - so Ss practice the contracted form "I'll've ..." Then Ss compare their ideas in pairs - Speaking ex2. Take some general FB.
