Materials

Abc Board

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of the present perfect tense in the context of phobias

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of phobias

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (1-2 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

In this stage I will talk about my phobias and will say how long I had them to the students in simple tenses that they already know. Then I will use present perfect in my sentences.

Exposure (1-3 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

In this stage, I will ask my students about their phobias and how long they've had it. Then I ask if they still have it or not.

Highlighting (1-2 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

I will write one of the sentences my students gave me on the board in present perfect tense twice. Once by using 'for' and once by using 'for'.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

I will clarify the tense by drawing a timeline on the board and I ask CCQs like: 1. What time is this tense? Present, past or future? Past. 2. Which one talks about a period of time? for 3. Is it still true? Yes. 4. Which one talks about a point of time/the beginning of the action? since Then I will ask the students to clarify the structure of the tense. And I will give them more examples for using 'for' (for two weeks, for ten years, for a long time, etc.) Then I will repeat the question I asked them previously "HOW LONG have you had this phobia?" and I will clarify we use "how long" for asking about duration of an action or a state.

Controlled Practice (3-5 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

In this stage I will ask the students to do part 9B on page 142 of their students' book in 2 minutes individually. Then we will check the answers with the whole class.
