Facts and Figures lesson
Elementary level

Description

In this lesson, ss practice saying and listening to numbers from 0 to 10. The lesson starts with a lead in and eliciting the numbers 0-10 from the ss. The first pre-listening activity includes spelling and pronouncing the numbers by putting the letters in correct order. The next activity is expected to be done in pairs when one student says the number, and the other - the numbers that go before and after. After that T elicits names of countries according to the number plates from ss. The first listening is listening for gist and ss have to answer the questions. The next activity is listening for details when ss have to match pictures with number plates to what they hear. Ss can be asked more detailed questions. The post-listening activity is in form of speaking that can be done in pairs or in small groups. Ss make short dialogues and report their partner`s answers to the class.

Main Aims

  • To provide practice of listening for specific detail.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To review and practice numbers from 0 to 10.

Procedure

Ice breaker/Lead-in (5-8 minutes) • To make students know their T, let students work cooperatively, preparation for the listening activities

Before the class starts ss are formed into groups. You write down your name in a jumbled way on the whiteboard, so that ss have to put the letters in order and spell the letters one by one. Ask ss to count the number of letters in your name and ss have to say the number. After that choose one of the students whose name starts with an exact letter (for example: T, B, or N). That student does not have to say his/her name out loud but write it on the board in a misspelled way. The other ss have to guess his/her name and write the name appropriately. As soon as ss see the model of the activity, they start working in groups and do the same with their names.

Pre-Listening (10-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the listening activity and revise vocabulary

Distribute handouts with exercises to be done to ss. Ask ss to go through Ex. 1 for a few seconds. After that ss are asked to put the letters of names of numbers in the correct order in small groups. They can write down the numbers on the board. Ss are given small handouts with the numbers. They work in pairs: one person takes a paper, says the number, and the other student says the numbers that come before and after. Teacher models the activity before ss will start working. If there is enough time you can change the partners and have them do the activity again, but this time writing the numbers.

Listening 1 (10-10 minutes) • To elicit the context, make students listen for a gist, ask them less challenging questions

Say the names of the countries in the box on the handouts provided to ss. Ask students to repeat them after you. To check their understanding you can ask ss to name the capitals of those countries. Then ss look at the pictures of number plates on their handouts. Ask them where you can see them. Explain to ss, who work in pairs, that they have to match number plates with countries by making short dialogues. Make sure they use useful phrases for it from the box on the worksheet. After that tell ss that they will listen to two short conversations (recordings 1.06-1.07 from the text book).Write on the board 'Where are they?', 'How many people are there?'. Ss work in groups. Assure them that they do not need to understand everything as it is listening for gist. Play the recording once. After listening ask ss as a whole group to answer the questions.

Listening 2 (10-10 minutes) • To make students work more precisely with more detailed questions

Tell ss that they will listen to the recording again but this time ask ss to listen more carefully especially when they hear the numbers. After that ss have to match two pictures with the number plates to what they hear. Students work in groups. If they are not able to do it, play the recording again. Ask more questions, for example: ' What kind of car do they have?', 'What are their names?'.

Post-Listening (5-7 minutes) • Expand on what students have learnt

Make students work in pairs. You can write down the questions on board. They can be: 'Do you have a car?', 'What is the number plate of your car?' and possible answers: 'Yes, I do/No, I don`t', 'The number plate is 729-PLA'. Students have to ask each other these questions. They can change their partners.
