Description

In this lesson the students will revise the 3rd Conditional and sentences with should/shouldn't have, to talk about past mistakes. First they will complete a vocabulary matching exercise then read 3 short texts about robberies gone wrong. This will be followed by a focus on form, starting with checking of meaning and focus on form. Finally, there will be controlled and free speaking practice of the forms in the context of regrets/past mistakes.

Main Aims

  • By the end of the lesson the learners will have reviewed and practised the 3rd Conditional and sentences with should/shouldn't have in the context of regrets/past mistakes.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To practise reading for specific information and detail in the context of past mistakes.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (15-25 minutes) • To demonstrate a getting to know you activity.To set lesson context and engage students

Demonstrate the 'Never have I...... activity with a small group of learners. Give and check instructions very carefully, then put ss in groups of 6-8. Quick feedback - what they found out about each other, etc.

Exposure (6-12 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation and pre-teach vocabulary

First set the scene with a couple of pictures relating to robberies. Elicit ideas from the ss - what could go wrong - security cameras, getaway car breakdown, etc. Provide instructions and demo if necessary. Use ICQs. Give out matching task. Provide key. Concept check vocabulary and ask for examples.

Introducing ss to the language indirectly (5-10 minutes) • To practise reading for specific information/detail, and set the context for the language

Set reading task. Instructions and ICQs. Do the first one as a demo if necessary. Ss try to find the robbers' mistakes. Feedback - verbal.

Highlighting of Form and Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To draw ss' attention to the forms, then clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Ask if it was a good idea to write the note on an envelope. Show an example sentence and elicit the first form, shouldn't have - see PPP Repeat the procedure and elicit a sentence with should - see PPP Repeat the procedure and elicit a sentence with if and could - see PPP In each case, check meaning and elicit the form from the class

Controlled Practice (6-10 minutes) • To prepare students for more meaningful practice

Demonstrate and allow ss to complete numbers 6-10 Monitor and provide answer key. Feedback - ask ss how they found the exercise, any questions?

Semi-Controlled and Free Practice (12-18 minutes) • To provide students with semi-controlled and free practice of the target language

Demo basic dialogue - use PPP Do a couple of examples - T-S, open and closed pairs. Move quickly on to the freer part, by providing some scenarios - See PPP Monitor and take notes for delayed correction if time.
