Description

In this lesson, students will be introduced to the vocabulary of family members in the context of talking about families. Students will listen for specific information in the context of describing family.

Materials

Abc Reading and Vocabulary, exercise 2 and exercise 3, page 18, Global Beginner CB
Abc My family pictures
Abc Cards with vocabulary of family members written on them

Main Aims

  • To introduce the vocabulary of family members in the context of talking about families

Subsidiary Aims

  • To listen for specific information in the context of describing your family

Procedure

Lead - in (6 minutes) • To generate interest in the topic.

In this stage T will show pictures of her family to the Ss.The T will put them on the wall and ask the Ss: "Who are these people?". Ss will answer: "family". After that T will ask: "Who is this?" for every member of the family and Ss will answer. T drills every new word with the class. T will write on the WB the answer "This is my family" and will elicit the question from the class. T will write on WB "This is my father" and will elicit the question from the Ss.

Language focus (presentation) (10 minutes) • To focus Ss on the TL and to clarify meaning, form, pronunciation.

Ss are introduced to family vocabulary by using cards with the words written on them. The T shows a person on one of the family pictures and Ss say the word. After that T shows a card with the word written on it and drills the word with different Ss.

Controlled practice (6 minutes) • To provide the Ss with controlled written practice of the TL.

In this exercise Ss will group different words about family in two main groups male and female. Ss work individually. T monitors and after that gives a FB by writing the answers on the WB.

First listening (3 minutes) • To practice pronunciation and listening for gist .

Ss are listening to different words about family vocabulary and repeat after the recording.

Controlled practice (7 minutes) • To provide the Ss with controlled written practice of the TL.

The T shows a generic family tree and get Ss in pairs to write the words into the correct places. Ss change their places and partner. T monitors and projects the answer on the WB.

Controlled practice (7 minutes) • To provide the Ss with controlled oral practice.

T shows an example of her family tree that is only half completed with some extra names at the bottom, T elicit the question. Ss need to ask to find out who the people are. Ss are asking and the T answers the question. T asks a S to come and write the name in the correct place.

Controlled practice (6 minutes) • To provide Ss with controlled oral practice

In this stage Ss will work in pairs. I'll give them two empty family trees. The Ss should write the names of their family at the bottom of the list. After that Ss exchange their lists with their partner. Ss ask the question: "Who is Peter?" for example and the other S answers. T monitors the task. T gives a FB. T writes on the WB the correct and the wrong sentences that Ss use and corrects them with the WC.

If time left T shows the Ss the cards with the words written on them and chooses a S who reads the word. T asks questions. For example: "What's your mother's name?", "How old is she?". S answers.
