Shopping
Beginner level

Description

Ss will begin the lesson by learning the vocabulary related to shopping. This will be done via two activities, a short video that will introduce three of the vocabulary words and a guess the price game that will get Ss engaged in using the vocab in a semi-realistic way. The vocab is a lead in to the receptive skills tasks. Ss will read for gist and identify which picture relates to the task, then Ss will read the text again and check their comprehension of the details of the text. Followed up by a highly structured productive skills task where Ss must interview their partner about the text and write in the appropriate information. The last activity will be a pictionary vocabulary review, with two alternative extension/back-up activities.

Materials

Main Aims

  • Ss will develop their receptive skills: reading for gist and then comprehension in the context of a text about shopping malls.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Ss will learn new vocabulary related to prices, shopping and items found in a shopping mall. Ss will be able to use this new vocabulary properly in a sentence.

Procedure

Lead-in video (4-5 minutes) • Warm-up, introduce topic and cover a few basic vocab words

As a warm-up show the video and ask Ss the following questions: 1) What is the elephant doing? A: Shopping 2) Why? A: His friend was sick 3) What did he use to pay for things? A: A credit card 4) What did he buy? (only ask if other questions are answered easily) A: Soup, blanket, medicine, tissues This activity should peek Ss interest, introduce the topic of shopping and introduce some of today's vocab.

Guess the price game (10-13 minutes) • Introduce new vocabulary and develop pronunciation

Ss divide into teams: groups of 2 or 3, each team gets a small stack of money. Ss will look at the picture on the PPT, guess how much that item would cost, and hold up the amount of money (Demonstrate with one slide. ICQ: I'll show the picture and you ...?). T will illicit the dollar amount from each group (to practice saying dollar amounts in a realistic situation) and write it on the board. The answer will be revealed and the closest team to the actual price gets a point, T will circle that dollar amount. After they have guessed the price, T will ask where they can buy it, first team to come up with the answer gets a bonus point. T will drill this location with the whole class. After this activity, we will do a bonus section where students guess the item/person, this is for vocab words that don't come with a price tag.

Read for gist (3-5 minutes) • Ss practice reading for gist

Ss are divided into AB groups, each group is given a different story with two pictures. Ss are given 1 minute to read the text and circle which picture best describes their story.

Comprehension check (5-7 minutes) • Ss remember the text

Ss will then open their sheet to the A & B chart. Ss will re-read the text and fill out their half of the chart. Ss can check with their group to ensure the answers are correct. *Only 1/2 of the chart is filled out in this stage* ICQ: Do you fill out this half? No... this half.

Interview (7-9 minutes) • Ss interview a classmate to complete the chart

T will point out the sentences above the chart: "how many ____ are in the Mall / Carrefour?" "There are/is ____ in the Mall/Carrefour", T will illicit a potential answer and drill it with the class. Ss will then change seats so they are sitting next to someone on the opposite team. They will then ask the questions above to fill in the other half of the form. T guides 2 Ss to provide an example for the class. T will monitor to ensure questions are being answered correctly, only doing WC review if necessary.

Pictionary (10-13 minutes) • Ss reinforce the vocabulary by drawing/guessing the words

One at a time, Ss come to the front and are given a card with the picture and word of what they will be drawing. Ss draw the picture and the rest of the class attempts to guess their drawing. ICQ: do you draw slowly or fast? Extension: pictionary cards are designed in such a way that the picture can easily be cut away from the word. If a few minutes remain, I will snip the cards in half and spread the pictures around the desks. Ss will be provided with the words at the bottom. Everyone will stand up and on my signal, will try and match all the words to the pictures.

Back-up: drawing a shopping mall • Ss create their own text based on the reading model

Ss work in groups of two or three, ensure all groups have a copy of the reading activity for reference. State that Ss must change the text, demonstrate this by writing one sentence "There are 90 interesting shops and there's a big supermarket." Cross out 90 and supermarket, illicit possible replacements from the Ss, write them into the spaces. State that Ss must change the text in this manner. When they finish, they must draw their shopping mall including all the details they have altered in the description.
