Main Aims

  • Reading

Subsidiary Aims

  • Speaking - Vocabulary

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-10 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

In this section of the lesson, I will ask the students to listen carefully as I tell a memory of mine involving food; the purpose of doing so is to engage students and make them interested in the topic of the lesson. Once I have finished telling my memory, I will ask the students to pair up and talk about their own memories involving food. I will then ask the students to share what they talked about with their partner.

Exposure (5-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

In this section, I will ask the students what they think the assigned text means with regard to both the title and the pictures. Once they have finished guessing what the text is going to be about, I will pre-teach the blocking words.

Presentation (5-10 minutes) • To have a gist task to check their prediction and then listening for more details

Having talked about the topic and taught the blocking words, I will give students 5 minutes to quickly read through the text (reading for gist); I will also write 3 question headings on the white board and students are supposed to write the correct question heading for each paragraph. The question headings are as follows: Where does our food come from? What do we eat? How do we eat?

Highlighting (5-10 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

In this section, students will read the text again while paying attention to details. Once they have finished reading, they will be given a number of detailed questions and the whole class will discuss the queries.

Free Practice (10-15 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

In this final section, I will ask the students to pair up and discuss the four following questions: What is a typical breakfast? What does your family have for breakfast? Is lunch or dinner the main meal of the day? What is a typical main meal? Once they have had enough time discussing the questions, I will ask for whole-class feedback and check their answers.
