Description

This lesson's aim is to introduce and practice structures of obligation to Upper intermediate students. SS will be provided guided and individual practice including graded text and tasks to accomplish main objective.

Materials

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of in the context of personal and professional resposibilities.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T welcomes SS to class, Asks any new SS to briefly introduce self to establish rapport. (1 min) T begins by telling SS "I wanted to go fishing today but I have to come to class" T nominates SS to answer "What is something you want to do but can't because of some obligation you have?"(1min) T shares with SS google slide with the sentence "Things I want to do vs Things I have to do" T uses annotate function to write one or two responses T gives SS two minutes via BOR to discuss with a partner T monitors T reminds SS when 30 secs are left in BOR T closes BOR T nominates one ss from each group to share responses (1-2mins) T uses annotate function on zoom to write some SS responses on google slide

Textwork (6-7 minutes) • To provide a model of the task and highlight useful words and phrases

T prepares to send link to google forms 1 in zoom chat T gets SS attention " Okay...." T Tells SS 'open the link i just sent you. read over the questions. you have 1 minute.' T then tells SS 'I will play an audio. Answer the questions individually. you have three minutes,'. (1min) T nominates ss and asks ICQ "how much time do you have?" (3 mins) "who will you work with?" T gives SS 1min to discuss answers in a group T nominates SS to share responses (2 min) OCFB

Language Clarification (14-17 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

T provides SS with link to google forms task T gets ss attention"NOW.... let's Open the link in the chat." "let's do #1 together" T goes over form and does one question with the class (2min) T " complete this form with a partner. you have 7 mins. compare with your partner when done" T sets timer to 7 minutes. T asks ICQ "how much time do you have?"(7mins) " what will you do once you are finished?" ( compare answers with partner) T separates SS into BOR T monitors Once time is up T instructs SS to submit for to get answer key. "time is up. please submit the form. check your answers." T gives SS 2 minutes to check answers T asks SS "did anyone have any trouble?" initiate OCFB

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide ss an opportunty to practice TL

T provides SS with link to google forms task T will give SS 5 minutes to fill out the form individually and then compare answers with a partner T " you have 5 minutes to complete the task individually"" let's do the first one together" T demos with the first question T asks ICQ "how much time do you have?"(5mins) " what will you do once you are finished?" ( compare answers with partner) T separates SS into BOR T monitors Once time is up, T will provide SS with answer sheet T gives SS 2 minutes to check answers OCFB

Freer Practice (5-6 minutes) • To provide students with practice for fluency of the task language in a conversational setting

T-SS 'On the board, you will see the word RESPONSIBILITY." "tell me, what do you understand by this word?" "what makes a person responsible?' SS will discuss with in a group setting what they understand by this word elicit ss usage of modals for obligation OCFB DEC
