Description

In this lesson the students will be lead to discover the difference of active and passive verb forms in certain newspaper articles. They will be presented with the passive verb forms and the sentence structures. Once they understand the meaning of the passive verbs they will learn the form and then they do the drilling for pronunciation. There will be a controlled practice task. Then they will try and write small newspaper articles to practice of the learnt grammar structure.

Main Aims

  • • To provide clarification, review and practice of of the passive verb forms in the context of writing news paper articles

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide product writing practice of a newspaper article in the context of accidents and natural disasters

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The students are asked questions about different newspapers and the news categories T asks the students which kinds of news they like, how often they read newspapers T tells the students that they will play a game

Exposure (6-8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

T shows some headlines one by one to the students T asks the students to tal in groups what kind of news can be after showing each headline T shows 4 headlines Then T shows the headlines on the projector Students are instructed to stand up in groups of 3 / 4 and to find the news stories relating to the headlines from the ones already pasted on walls Feedback

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

T asks the students to look at the texts again (provided on their tables this time) in groups T asks the students to find the difference between the two underlined expressions in the texts Students discuss to find out the difference between the active and the passive forms T guides and tries to lead the students to find the answers

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

T clarifies the meaning T asks CCQs T writes the form on white board T does some drilling for pronunciation

Controlled Practice (6-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Students read the articles given in groups They choose the right verb Feedback

Free Practice (15-18 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language
