Probability and Speculation

Description

In this lesson, students through guided self-discovery will be able to formulate thoughts and ideas expressing the possibility of the occurrence of something. Using grammar, Ss will be able to talk about potential future events as they could or couldn't happen, touching on past probabilities. Ss will manage to coordinate their knowledge with contextual reasoning for use in speech and understanding.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of Possibility and Predictions in the context of Usage of graphene for products in the future.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice of language used for Making speculations in the context of Usage of products and stating predications
  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a Conversations in speculation in the context of Environment, Pollution, and Plastics

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Students will look at a picture of a man holding a honeycomb of graphene and the students will be asked "What might this material be used for?" and they will answer unknowingly using modal verbs.

Gist and Intensive Activity (7-8 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Ss will then be led to an audio from the book about graphene and its supposed uses, and a gist activity to find different types of graphene that can be used, followed up by the detailed activity in which they will find the modal verbs within the text. We will go through the answers as a class due to time constraints to get answers and ensure Ss are grasping the concepts of modal verbs.

MFP (12-15 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Ss will go through the slideshows with on Google slides and with Meaning and form and will answer questions based on CCQ's to get them to understand the different usages of the modal verbs along with adverbs and adjectives or probability or speculation. Afterward, I will ask the students to answer questions about pronunciation and have them say aloud their answers to review pronunciation and make corrections if necessary.

Controlled Practice (3-4 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Controlled practice will consist of the gap-fill exercise with students needed to guess which word best fits the sentence with an identifier of highly unlikely to very likely next to the phrases for them to fit the modal verb best. The review will be made afterward together as a class.

Free Practice (8-9 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Freer practice will end off in breakout rooms, students will take 5 minutes to discuss their potential usage of graphene if they were int he position to create anything using the modal verbs that we have reviews in class, and any corrections from the feedback will be reviewed and made for the class.
