Subsidiary Aims

To provid listening practice and speaking practice to develop students' fluency
Procedure (31-45 minutes)
The teacher tries to set the context by saying that her CELTA course is going to be finished tomorrow and she has 2 more days for going around the city. she asks the students to work in pairs and discuss where the teacher should go and what options she has to get there. could she take the bus or the subway? when they finish, the teacher conducts WC FB and elicits "could, should and would".
In this stage the students are going to watch a video related to the context. A traveler is at a travel agency and the agent is asking her about her preferences. The agent is also giving her advice on the different options the traveler has for passing around. The target language will be exposed to the students and they are given the chance of getting familiar with the language within the context. Before starting the video, the teacher tries to elicit the difference between express and local train and a window and an aisle seat.
In order to better highlight the language, the teacher gives the students a handout which is the transcription of the film with some blank parts. The students should fill the blanks with "would, should and could" and check their answers with their partners. when the time is over, they will watch the video again and check their answers.
The teacher selects three sample sentences from the video transcripts and writes them on the board. She asks CCQs to elicit the form and the difference between "should, could and would". There will also be some pronunciation drilling. Teacher asks the students to produce some examples to check their understanding.
Teacher gives the second handout to the students. Students go through the task and decide which modal is appropriate for each situation. The modal verbs are written under each questions. Students do it individually and discuss the answers in pairs. teacher gives the correct answers to each pair on sheets of paper.
Students are given the third hand out to work on. This task is less controlled than the previous one. The students will work in pairs and decide which modal verbs to choose without any given help. After they finish the task, they check their answers in groups and after that the teacher conducts whole class feedback and asks students from each group come to the board and have the correct answer for other students.
In the end of the lesson, students are ready to produce their own language through freer practice. The teacher gives them the chance by pairing them and giving them the visuals. She instructs them on how to do the task and asks them to role play as a traveler and a travel agent. If time allows, teacher conducts whole class feedback.
