Places to go
Elementary level

Description

In this lesson, the students will expand their vocabulary, particularly in the field of town facilities; they will also learn and practice when to use have to, don't have to, can and can't

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of the use of have to, don't have to, can and can't

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of different pieces of vocabulary related to town facilities in the context of places we want to go to

Procedure

Lead-in and Introduction to Vocabulary (6-8 minutes) • To set the context and engage students. To clarify the meaning of unfamiliar words and practice pronunciation.

The students will be focused on the two postcards. I will ask them to say which place they'd like to go to and why. Then, I will ask them to find the items in the pictures. I will check whether they know the meaning of the words and explain/elicit the ones they don't know. They will have a couple of minutes to check individually, and then a minute to check the answers. Very important thing at this point is drilling, both of individual words, such as square, statue, museum, castle, fashionable, but also of compound nouns, such as sports stadium, pedestrian street, shopping centre, art galllery. I will also check the stress on compound nouns.

Listening Part (3-4 minutes) • To listen for specific expressions that will be used with the target vocabulary in order to describe certain places

The students look at the gapped sentences and work in pairs to suggest the missing words. They then check with the recording.

Vocabulary practice (6-7 minutes) • To practice the vocabulary based on the previous exercises

The sts work in pairs. They look at the postcards. In case that the students know some of the places, they should choose that postcard to talk about. Each student in turn takes a postcard and talks about it. They will be encouraged to use some of the expressions in Exercise 3. The Barcelona postcard shows Placa Real, Gaudi House, a section of the Ramblas and a park; the sydney postcard shows sydney Harbour Bridge, sydney olympic stadium, sydney opera house and Bondi Beach; the London postcard shows Tower Bridge, Nelson's Column and The serpentine Gallery in Hyde Park.

Clarification (8-9 minutes) • To introduce the meaning of have to/don't have to/can/can't

The sentences from this exercise will be written on the board. Also, I will stick 4 signs on the board, so the students can see and think about which sign goes with which sentence. They should be able to guess the answers without necessarily knowing have to and don't have to. They will do this check individually and then compare in pairs before checking with the class. I will first check whether the students understand the meaning of necessary. Then, I will ask them to match the verbs a-c with the meanings 1-4. I will elicit and check the understanding of each form (details in LA) I will also highlight 'has' and 'doesn't'

Exposure (8-9 minutes) • To practice the use of the four forms and to practice pronunciation

The students will focus on the 8 pictures and will be asked to complete the gaps. Before they check with the class, they can check in pairs. Instead of saying the answers, the students will write the appropriate answer under the photo and read the full sentence. Each sentence will be drilled. Particular focus will be on can and can't. This exercise will involve quite a lot of drilling, as I want to use pretty similar pattern for the last exercise, which should provide more space for the students to produce the acquired knowledge from the lesson.

semi-controlled/freer practice (10-12 minutes) • To practice the four grammar forms in given situations

I will write 4-6 different places on the pieces of paper: a school, a cinema, a hospital, a swimming pool, a library, etc. The students start working in pairs. Each pair gets one topic. They have to write 5 rules for each of their places, but they should not say the answer to the other pairs. After 4-5 minutes, they will be regrouped in threes or fours. Their task in these groups will be to read a set of rules to the others, who have to guess the place. Check who guessed the place. A minute or two will be devoted to a couple of examples and the final drilling should be done, if needed.
