Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of health collocations in the context of health care

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in common expressions and collocations in the context of health care and lifestyle

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Greet the students and ask them about their conception of what a healthy lifestyle entails, as well as if they have healthy lifestyles by their standards. This contextualizes the students and enables them to talk about themselves, engaging them in the conversation and, therefore, in the lesson.

Exposure (3-5 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Remind students of the work they did with this text last week and allow them a couple of minutes to read and remember the content of the text, paying special attention to the highlighted expressions and what they mean in their context.

Highlighting (4-6 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

After they've read the text and seen the TL in its context, do a matching exercise to test their recollection of what they read and their pre-existing knowledge. The students work individually for 3 minutes before moving on to OCFB. Once they have done that, the students classify each expression between "healthy" and "unhealthy", to confirm their familiarity with the meaning and context in which each expression is used.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Once the students have familiarized themselves with each expression, five words are analyzed word by word, eliciting and practicing the MFP of each one.

Controlled Practice (6-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Students are shown nine sentences which they need to complete by using each expression, They do so individually first with the help of a Google Forms form, and then they check their answers in pairs, before a final OCFB.

Free Practice (7-9 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Near the end of the lesson, students are presented with three questions to apply each expression to their own context, asking them about their countries, their own lives and lifestyle changes they could adopt. They are invited to use the expressions learnt in class and discuss in pairs for five minutes before the final feedback and error correction.
