Description

In this lesson the students are going to talk about different reasons of travelling. They are going to read a text about a person who gave up his job for the sake of travelling around the world. students will develop their reading skills by the help of reading for gist and reading for specific information. As a sub aim, students will discuss if they consider giving up their job or studies to travel to different places.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist, scan and detailed reading practice by the help of a text on giving up job to travel around the world

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in the context of travelling

Procedure

Warmer (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher shows some pictures to the students and tries to elicit some information through CCQs. The pictures are related to travelling. She asks her students to look carefully at the pictures and try to make a logical connections between them and discuss their opinions in groups.

Pre-Reading (5-7 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Teacher writes a couple of questions related to the topic on the board and asks students to discuss their answers in pairs. When they are ready, the teacher conducts WC feedback and asks a couple of the students to express their ideas to the whole class. The students should answer questions like " Why do people travel?" , "Do they know anyone who travels a lot?" and "What is good and bad about travelling?"

While-Reading #1 (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist reading tasks

Teacher writes three titles on the board and gives a text to the students with a missing title. Students are given time to go through the text and read it fast individually and then discuss the best title with their partners. Students should try to get the general idea of the text to be able to choose the best title from among the three. In the end teacher asks the whole class for the best option.

While-Reading #2 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with scan reading tasks

In this stage, teacher has the reading text on the walls. there are six highlighted phrasal verbs in the text. their matching counterparts are ready on slips of paper. Students should go to each part and match the phrasal verbs with their definition after they are grouped by the teacher. They should also change their group to check their answers with other groups. When they take their seats they check the corrects answers on the board. The teacher writes the answer on the board while the students are busy with their job.

While-Reading # 3 (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed reading task

Teacher gives a hand out to the students and instructs them what to do. There are some questions written on paper. Students will read the questions and answer them with their partner. They are not allowed to look at the text. When they are finished they will check their answers with other members of the group and then read the text once more to find the correct answers. Answers will be checked in whole class format.

Post-Reading (4-6 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

As a post reading activity, students are asked to work in pairs and discuss if it is a good idea to give up work and travel around the world. They should provide reasons to defend their ideas. They should also say their partner if they have ever met such a person in their lives or not.
