Description

This lesson starts with a conversation and then a short clip about ordering a meal in the context of '' Ordering a meal''. The TL for this lesson comes from the clip, Alona and Maher's lessons. The students will practice and learn how to use countable and uncountable nouns,how to ask and manage conversations in the relevant topics in daily life. For the subsidiary aim of the lesson, the students will have a productive skill practice(fluency speaking practice) in the same context and they will practice some functional language of politeness when they order a meal.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of countable and uncountable nouns and How much/How many, and quantifiers

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of ordering a meal
  • To provide clarification and practice of language used for ordering food in the context of ordering food

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (6-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Introduce myself. Tell the Ss about my favorite Turkish food. Give HO of four corners. Ss interview each other to find out interesting facts about them. Take some FB. (Ss tell other groups what they have found about each other)

Exposure (10-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a clip

Introduce characters of the clip. Give a picture from the clip and ask Ss to guess what they are talking about. Play a mute clip (Activating schemata) Ss in small groups discuss the best conversation for each person. Take some FB. (Ss compare their answers with different groups S-centered FB) Play the clip again and Ss compare their answers. Elicit the functional language to order a meal. (Would you like...? Could I have...? I'd like....) Elicit the difference between 'I want to have some wine' and 'I'd like to have some wine' (the 2nd is polite) Project the slides on the w/b ad Ss in pairs practice the dialogue. (disappearing dialogue) The aim is fluency and accuracy in the use of functional language. Ss will be given different pictures of fruit and food. Ss describe the pictures in their group and then they categorize them on the w/b under countable and uncountable nouns. Take some FB. ( each group checks another group's job)

Highlighting (3-3 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Ss will be given different pieces of paper including the grammar of the lesson and each group discuss about them and then they stick on the w/b. Take WC FB.( I will ask the Ss if they agree with them or not)

Clarification (10-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Give out HO from English Unlimited. Ss read the example sentences. Ss in small groups try to find out the rules for countable and uncountable nouns. Take FB. ( Ss will write the answers on the w/b) Some CCQs: For vocabulary, I will use the pictures and because vocabulary is not in my aims, I will not spend my time on it. Do we have some people in Istanbul? No Do we use ‘how many’ for countable nouns or uncountable nouns? Countable nous Do we use ‘a lot of’ just for uncountable nouns? No. Do we use ‘how many’ and ‘how much’ in questions or answers? Questions Is salt countable or uncountable? Uncountable Do we have a lot of bananas in the picture? (in the context: No) Do we use a/an before plural nouns e.g an apples? No Do we use a/an before uncountable nouns? No Which one of these sentences is polite: Would you like some wine? Or Do you want some wine? (1st one) Which one of these sentences do we use in a polite request: Could I have some wine? Or I want some wine.(1st one) Ss drill the sentences from the clip and their own sentences. (focus on pronunciation)

Controlled Practice (5-5 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Give out HO from English Unlimited ex 2. Ss individually answers the questions. Ss peer-check. Play the recording to check all answers. Ss practice intonation and pronunciation in case they have problems.

Semi-Controlled and freer Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Give out HO (Top notch WB) Ss in pairs try to find out about their partners' food. Take some FB. ( Ss check with each other and another groups and the the whole class FB but S-centered) Give out HO(Top Notch Copy and Go) Ss in pairs try to find out their partners food. Student A and B. Take some FB. ( Ss check with each other and another groups and the the whole class FB but S-centered)

Freer Practice (4-5 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

This part is optional in case I have enough time. Ss will discuss these questions: Do you eat healthy food or unhealthy food? How about your family? What could be the best diet? Take some FB. (Ss express their answers to the class)

Feedback and Error Correction (3-3 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

I will write the errors and some correct statements form the Ss on the w/b. Ss work in pairs to identify the errors and the correct forms. Take some FB. (Ss try to correct the mistakes)
