Reading and Speaking
Pre-Intermediate level

Description

In this lesson, students will do a series of reading and speaking tasks based around the theme of technology.

Materials

Abc The Luddites

Main Aims

  • To provide reading and speaking-fluency practice with two readings of the same text.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Students will get practice using receptive skills.

Procedure

Lead-in (5-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Students will take a minute to work alone and write down three things that they use every day. Then, in pairs or groups of three, they will discuss what they have written down. The goal is to have each one of them mention technology in their list, for example phone; iPad, computer, gps.

Pre-teach vocabulary (10-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Elicit the definition of "movement" in the form of a noun and in the context of action. Ask "what is it called when a group of people are working together for a common reason?" Elicit the definition of "textile" by using realia, specifically a handkerchief, a shirt, a piece of cloth, etc. Write the words on the board. In pairs, have students discuss the form and then write form and number of syllables on the board next to the words. Nominate students to place word stress over appropriate vowel. CIC drilling for pronunciation

Reading #1 (10-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Give the students 5 minutes to read the paragraph about Luddites. In pairs or small groups, students will discuss what kind of people the Luddites were.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (10-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Students will read the text again. After another 5 minutes, I will introduce a role-play task where, in groups of three or 4, students will each be given a piece of paper that says "pro-technology" or "luddite". The students will ask each other questions to find out who the luddite in their group is.

Post-Reading (5-5 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Students will be nominated to discuss who the luddite in their group was and what questions they asked to come to that conclusion. We could also discuss what kind of questions you would ask to get to that conclusion, for example, "what app do you use to get directions in NYC?"
