Description

In this lesson, students get familiar with several vocabularies through a reading text and get to discuss about health and food. They also learn about quantifiers through designed activities and instructions. Finally, the lesson will be concluded by a free practice of speaking to assess their grasp.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist reading practice using a text about staying healthy and expanding longevity in the context of food, health

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (10-15 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

First I ask them several questions related to food. Then, I will have them stand around the class. Then, I distribute cards with picture on them. They should describe the content without saying the name of the food directly.They take turns.

Pre-teach reading/ Teaching vocabularies (3-5 minutes) • To teach them essential words

I write 5 to 8 vocabularies on the board. Then, I ask them to read them to find out if they can pronounce it or if anyone can describe the meaning in English. If there are new vocabularies, I clarify for them through explanations, body language or other approaches.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

I give them 4 minutes to read the text and think about questions. Then, they have 4 minutes to work in pairs to check their answers with each other.

controlled practice (2-4 minutes) • To concept check

I ask volunteers to answer to several questions related to the text.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

I ask them to create a short scenario with their partner. One of them should be a doctor and the other one is searching for advice to stay healthier and live longer.

Warmer for grammar (3-5 minutes) • To create suitable ambiance to teach grammar

I stick a poster to the board and try to elicit them

Teaching grammar (5-10 minutes) • To teach quantifiers

I give them instruction about how and when to use them and also give them examples.

Controlled Practice (10-15 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Students are given 5 minutes to solve the practice in book. Then, we check their answers by playing the related audio.

Semi-controlled practice (3-6 minutes) • To concept check

They should solve the practice in page 28 and then check them in pairs.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

I give them worksheets and ask them to ask questions about the quantity of materials using the grammar. They should take turn in asking and answering.
