Tellying Lies, Reading lesson

Description

In this lesson, students will practice scanning a text in the context of different kinds of lies. The lesson will start with a discussion of different kinds of lies, mentioned in a listening. Sts will then read of text on a computer program that can detect lies. Sts will reread the text looking for specific answers to questions. Sts will read two emails and debate who is lying. Sts will end with freer practice discussing lying.

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a Conversation and debate in the context of getting an email from an employee

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T will elicit Sts to say different kinds of lies "Are there different kinds of lies?" "Are some lies good?"

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

T will split the Sts up into groups. Discuss is it OK to tell white lies? The recording will discuss different kinds of lies. What kind of lies do they mention? What do you think they mean? Play Track 6 of CD 3 English Unlimited. Discuss your answers.

While reading (8-10 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

T will explain Sts will be given a reading, on a computer program that can detect lying. Sts will be asked to read the text in 1:15 minutes and discuss in groups if they think it will work. Sts will then be given three Questions (from page 88), and told to look at the text and find the relevant information. They will then discuss in groups if they have the same information. T will then ask different groups to write their answer on the board, and Sts will discuss if they have different answers as a class.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Sts will be split into pairs and told to read one emails, and be given a team they will represent. Sts will then debate in groups why they think they other person is lying. T will tell the Sts they can site the previous reading. The class will then vote on which email they think is a lie, and write the reasons why on a T-chart on the board.

Freer practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Sts will discuss if they are good at telling lies or spotting when someone is lying. If discussion is slow, T will ask Sts to write some of their opinions on the board. Then move Sts into different groups
