Comparing Cities

Description

In this lesson, Students make the comparative form of the adjective. They will work on the word stress and syllables of the adjectives.Students write sentences to compare Istanbul and Ankara and they decide is life better in the capital or outside capital in turkey. They will come up with the ideas to proof their decision.

Main Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of comparing two cities

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide review of comparatives in the context of Istanbul and Ankara

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will show students pictures of Ankara and Istanbul and ask Which city is this ? -Istanbul What about this one? Which city is this ? - Ankara Which city do you prefer to live in and why? I will put them in pairs to discuss the question.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

There will WC feedback after they discuss it with their partner and I will write the sentences i hear I will choose the ones with different method. e.g Istanbul is bigger than Ankara. Istanbul is more interesting than Ankara. Ankara is worse than Istanbul and Ask how many syllabus are there in each adjective and how did we form comparatives what are the exceptions in these ones.

Useful Language (8-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

Students will make the comparative form of the adjectives as in the examples on the board. Do the exercises in number 1. Whats the number of the exercise on your handout? Are you going to work with your pair? /. After they finish they check their answers with partners and then as a whole class we will answer it and I will write the answer on the board. There is a text about Istanbul and Ankara You will complete the text. Put adjectives in brackets into comparative form. What's text about ? Istanbul and Ankara.Whats the number of the exercise on your handout? -2 Are you going to read the text? No , Check with pairs before we give the answers as a WC

Productive Task(s) (18-20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Students work groups of three, A, B and C and I will ask each student to read their role carefully. I will have two students to read the role for class. and then give students two or three minutes to prepare what they are going to say. Students act out the role play.

Feedback and Error Correction (8-10 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

I will note errors while they are acting out their role play. In FB, I will ask Student A whose advice they are going to take. Students discuss in their groups then as a class
